Anyone been catching it... im hooked.. stunning stories.. stunning visuals and it tries very hard to be not too sci-fi. something it manages well.

last nights episode had almost nothing to do with sci-fi whatsoever.. coulda been any old episode of CSI :) only with military outfits on hehe

It seems to me that it's not really SF at all, the way "Star Wars" is not really SF - it's a story that happens to take place in space. SF tends to be more science-technology oriented, relying on exotic concepts. In both "Galactica" and "Star Wars", these are peripheral to the story - we accept that there is such a thing as FTL drive and it is never explained (no warp drive and attendant appendages as in "Star Trek").

However, it is indeed a great series (currently showing on one of the German channels here), good stories, good, meaty, flawed characters trying to cope with the unthinkable. I only hope that they can keep up the standard - and that they don't have to compromise because of US ratings. I hear that it does pretty well in the ratings, so I'm hopeful (remember that Roddenberry's original "Star Trek" was originally rejected as being "too cerebral").

Love it. Not as good as the short-lived Firefly, but excellent stuff nonethless. Whole lot better than the dark days of Babylon 5!

And that blonde cylon leaves me speechless and reaching for the pause button....

glad to see im not the only one that likes it. Its impressed me from day one. And the soundtrack choice (drums during combat situations) only adds to the tension.

as you say its a series of characters that do have their problems having to make impossible choices that most of us will never have to deal with. A lot of moral implication is dealt with.

PLus i have the upmost respect for Edward James Olmos's Adama. He plays the part with conviction and sincerity

Well, I love both series, but I like firefly more because its more original and less cliched than BSG. More engaging stories and better written (as one would expect from Mr. Whedon).

less cliched? not sure id have gone that far.. only having seen the movie of course... it seems to fall into a lot of sci-fi cliches.

feels far too much like a cross between andromeda and farscape for my liking

The series is a lot better. No resemblence to either of those really - more like das boot.

gonna have to disagree with you BBV, I think the Das Boot film is superior to the series. One of my all time favourite films. If Peter Jackson could make three hours fly by like Wolfgang Peterson, LOTR might have been less tiresome.

And its the only film that makes me truly lament the sale of my subwoofer all those years ago :gatling:

I like that BSG allows the stories to slowly evolve then disappear and reappear later also the consequences of actions carry on. None of this the audience can't cope with something that 'complex'.

Not having cable or satellite I've been watching it on DVD and am only slightly narked that the Season 2.0 boxset is only half the season.

The 'Serenity' movie was IMHO usual Joss Weadon: dumb story, smart writing. I liked Firefly but he hadn't had time to mess it up before it got cancelled which was good.

DT - I think you misunderstood. I was saying the BG series is more like Das boot than it is like andromeda or farscape and far better than the BG movie. I wasnt comparing the various versions of das boot.
