    And here it is...

No bass. No treble. No definition. No soundstage. No image. No detail.

The best that can be said is that it can follow a tune and it isn't harsh.

I bought it in 1991. Back then it was the first ever personal CD player to be able to play music (as opposed to just making uninvolving music-like noises which is what all the Sonys, Aiwas, etc. did at the time). It cost £200.

All metal case work too. And only 15mm thick.

A plan is afoot to remedy this dire situation however ;)

Not my experience - Sony have always made the best sounding portables, as shown by the serious following many of their older machines have, fetching prices similar to their RRPs when new a decade or more ago. Oh, and Denon, their high-end models always sounded very good.

I'd certainly be very interested to hear what you plan to do with the beast :)

I have that CD player! Its damn good! Thinnest I have seen even today. However mine developed a crack and the lid didn't stay shut properly :(

Are you planning to upgrade from the Alpha 9 or just replace it with something equal?

If you still have the Alpha 9 and don't want it, I'd be happy to give you £10 to post it this way. I have one as well and wouldn't mind some where to get spares from if it goes tits-up!

Regardless of whether I get a new player, the Alpha 9 is going to be repaired and will probably remain at technobear towers for the forseeable future.
I seem to remember there was a Sony portable at the time which cost £300 or more and was good. The other players I tried were all in the £160 - £200 range (which was the least you could pay at the time). They all sounded flat and uninvolving. The Technics was a revelation. I still use it at work in preference to the PC. I won't get rid of it.

    Hi Chris,

 I use to own that exact same CD portable back in the mid 90's. Use to use it with a pair of Goodmans Maxamp active speakers (active versions of the Maxim speakers which I guess most will remember). Quite a decent system for mid to background level music whilst I was in student digs. Certainly well suited to a budget setup with small speakers but just a bit lacking at the frequency extremes if you put it into a more high-end/revealing set-up like yours. :)
