that would mean i could use it though and i dont want to do that i just want it to play music and look good. I mean what else is a mac good for... ps. i'm not trying to start a mac/pc flame war
doorstop firewood fishtank (if you remove the crt) toaster (if you remove the chip fan) ...err, that's about it! Just joshing! If they weren't so expensive and/or more modular like a PC, so I could build one in stages, I might be interested. I'm getting fed up with PC problems and agro...
Dom, I don't think you quite get it. Buy a mac and get on with your life, there is no need to build a PC. The new imacs are very competative price, considering there is at least a 17inch flat screen monitor there is well.
garyi, I dont think you get the point either, a mac is just a fashion item, it has no value or use. spending that much money what ever it is would be a waste. all you need is a nice PC and it can do every thing you need, and you have more then one mouse button . ps. still the screens seem pretty goood although there are better about.
i once read a description of the dichotomy between pc and mac (i think it was in douglas couplands microserfs).. mac's appeal to females in that they are intended to provide a good solid product that lets you get on with what you are doing. pc's appeal to males in that they are able to be tweaked, overclocked and faffed about with and need to be to get the best out of them. perhaps this is why hi-fi is a predominantly male hobby. cheers julian
Dom, would you want to build a Dell in stages? or a Compaq or blah? I'm sick of people comparing homebuilds to Macs, it's like apples and kiwis... i had the same reservations as you, before i made the switch, i've been building PCs since i blew up my first motherboard i don't miss being able to swap out the motherboard, cpu, psu, case... these are going to do me fine for at least 3 years (maybe not, might be tempted to upgrade before then), as that just happens to be the term of my loan but i get to play around with ram, drives & funkey case lights until then. Julian: Nose hit head on... though it doesn't take much to get the best from a mac
Zoomer, you sound like a teenager who hasn't got a clue, macs for instance are used in 70% of publishing. They arn't just pretty things although for people like me that is important, they are also rock solid work horses. Until you have experience of both keep your uneducated comments to yourself.
garyi Sorry it seems i have offended you some how by expressing my dislike for macs. but... For starters I am not a teenager i have worked for companies that use both MAC and PC. in fact I have working in an Apple center. what i use at home is a PC with Linux installed which i supose is the best of both worlds, as its stable and has good fast hardware. as for design work i would agree that there are people that only use macs. but this is a changing pattern and a lot more design related companies are swapping some machines and having a mixed system.
Errm, Macs use a proper flavour of UNIX as their underlying OS. I see the main advantage of having a Mac is that I can read anything, and I mean anything that's sent to me or put in the CD tray. Hell, I can even run any version of Windows and or Linux and associated applications on my Mac. I've been in IT now for over 15 years and worked with practically everything. I know a good system when I see it. I now only keep a PC for games and do all the real stuff on my Mac - I won't let the PC anywhere near the internet. Oh and by the way when was the last time you heard of a Mac virus. The last one I encountered was in 1997
Actually was a couple of months ago but i hear about mac viruses as often as i do linux ones. btw there would be nothing stopping me installing BSD or somthing if i wanted propper UNIX.
