but perhaps someone here can help. 5 or so years ago I purchased the Teac Reference 100 system X's 2 for each one of my then adolescent and teenage kids (2). They loved 'em! And they still do.

I believe at the very least I have given them some reasonable reference to reproduced sound. My old system consisted of a Oracle Alex Mkll/Premier MMT tonearm/Grado sig 8 cart, Pioneer "Elite" cd -54 player (I think similar to the 802), Audiolabe 8000A and Castle Durham 900 loudspeakers. I've upgraded only once and the upgrade was an SME 309 magnesium/McCormack microline drive and McCormack DNA .5 deLuxe....

But now back to the Teacs. Both cannot initially read the discs inserted. I have chased the problem down to some really terrible plastic gears that move the tray in and out and move the mechanism into the locked position. The mechanism/transport is marked KSL-2130CCM.

I am looking at replacing the complete transport/mechanism , and I stumbled across what appears to be a high quality Sony OEM cd player (add on, without a front bezel or identifier) that if I read the numbers correctly is from a 1996 Lincoln.

Anyone know anything about these units? Are the instruction sets (language) the same usually for most cd players?? I had contemplated trying to graft a cd rom into the little Reference systems, but this Sony seems so well built.

any ideas or whatever would be appreciated.

There are only a few companies who make transports worldwide with Phillips and Sony being 2 big players. I dont think they are interchangable easily. For example, my Densen has a Sony mech - so it has the annoying 'no wraparound' on the track jump buttons ie you cant get to last track by going << ....Marantz transports have this sensible feature

No you cannot just interchange transports unfortunately. They can use different clock frequencies and as Graham said, its more than just the tray mech, its related to the display, controls etc. Personally I'd probably try to bodge the gears with something else, then start looking to get a replacement transport (identical) if I break it.

I've seen reading the disc problems on machines whose lasers are near but not quite at the end of there useful. I've also had a few mechanical problems with gears ...if they are not mashed try lubing them with a good silicone grease...but keep it away from the laser and discs.

    thanks...

well I can completely replace the whole mechanism/laser, etc. just try hooking it up to the contols and display drivers. If not I guess I'll remove the transport completely, make a panel, and hunt down the analogue out from the cd player and wire in another "aux" jack pair..
