Pioneer's Technical Audio Devision (TAD) - isn't that just PA speakers and equipment?

Bluray is optical isn't it? Could it be good? I think there is a tie with Sheffield labs? Keith.

while the technology will be good - but what about the actual recordings..? - if the mainstream labels are churning poorly sound cds then what hope is there for this..?

or will it only be a 'niche' with regards to the cd's that will be released...? i.e. remaster of REM etc...
like what happened with dvd-a and sacd... :(

You've got to admire the position -

"While the industry has made a steady shift towards compressed audio, we believe that home audiences deserve a richer listening experience and there is a tremendous opportunity with emerging high definition technology to develop a medium that can successfully maintain the integrity of an original recording,"

My school of thought :) says:

"Every Musical Instrument must vibrate .. resonate , flutter to emit a sound ... the cartridge Stylus vibrates and resonates into the groove and so it can emit the same sound .. a laser doesn't vibrate while it reads a CD .. so it can't reproduce the same sound"

Due to this .. a CD player 'll never can sound like a good turntable

Anything that improves the hifi experience at home can only be a good thing.

Got to question the future of optical media though. With many people now reporting that PC/Mac into good Dacs are performing as well if not better than top CDPs highend audio is surely going to move quickly in this direction isn't it?

    And this from blu-ray.com :

Technical Audio Devices (TAD), a subsidiary of Pioneer Electronics, will be demonstrating a new audio-only Blu-ray format at their booth at CES this year. This format, which will provide uncompressed 24bit 192kHz stereo audio, has not been named, though it sounds like this may be the first Blu-ray Profile 3.0 (Audio Only) demonstration.

While most Blu-ray users are familiar with Profiles 1.0, 1.1 (BonusView), and 2.0 (BD-Live), very few are aware that Blu-ray has yet another profile which allows for an audio only experience. Basically, the same audio codecs can be used (PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio) to provide users with a lossless/uncompressed audio experience at the highest fidelity, but without any requirements for video interaction. Much like CDs or SACDs, the disc would only have to be inserted into the player before it would automatically begin playing. All current players would be capable of playing the disc, but the spec allows for other, audio only players to be released as well.

The final sentence looks interesting - let's open a book on who will be first to market with a 'proper', 'audiophile grade' Blu-Ray Audio Player (I think the acronym should be BAP). :D Then we could have BAP transports with a separate BAPDAC, then we could have all-in-ones again, then we could have upsampling BAPDAC's and all the time we could carry on buying vinyl. Awesome.

Utterly ridiculous. Didn't they learn from SACD and DVD-A?????

Like I need another version of that Miles Davis album or that crappy Billy Joel one.

The future of media is on a HD/flash drive or via a network one can access.

Can't wait to see the Linn or Naim Blu-ray player for $5,000. What a joke.

That doesn't seem particularly ambitious given the storage capacity of a BluRay disc? I was expecting something like 64bit 768khz... Am I overestimating or could they be saving space for the other pointless 3.1 channels?

BD players are now well below £200. They can all deliver HD audio. This could work where DVD-A and SACD didn't.

Except that CD is all we need, if only the bastards would use it properly...

This format, which will provide uncompressed 24bit 192kHz stereo audio

great except..anything recorded using 24bit is going to be pretty naff unless you like Girls Aloud. Previous to that we have good old 16bit PCM...the death of music! Anything and everything good was done on analog. So are they really going to transfer everything to this new format or just the new stuff that can take advantage to the bit rate.

What about Blu-Ray games. Then we could categorize them as:

    1 Blu-Ray Games
    2 Blu-ray Movies
    3 Blu-ray Audio
    4 ? anymore
