Well after 7 months of unemployment :( I've been offered a research scientist position with a company based in Cambridge :D. The only hurdle now is I've got to find accomodation and relocate myself and my assorted crap/hifi to Cambridge by the 20th of this month .

PS I should have said well done too. I know how tough it is getting jobs these days with the tough market conditions. It seems you can get rejected just for opening a door the wrong way these days.

    Hi Bl21de3

I often work in cambridge, great place, shame about housing/rental prices.

If you want a couple of pages photocopied from the cambridge estate agent/letting agent section let me know.

Are you looking at renting/buying/commuting in from nearby?

Thanks for the comments guys. AT, I've already got my PhD. I'm off to earn some 'real' money in biotech :p. Bottleneck, cheers for the offer of help. I've been looking at renting in Cambridge as I'll be on the usual 3 month probation period. In fact I'm heading down tomorrow to have a look at a few properties I found through www.cambridgeletting.co.uk. But I know what you mean about the prices, £600+ for a 1 bedroom flat/house  mind you the wages are a hell of a lot better than what I was earning up here so I reckon I'll still have some spare cash for the odd hifi tweak/upgrade. Just hope I can come up with something tomorrow/early next week as one of the properties I was supposed to be viewing tomorrow has already gone in the space of a day  and there's not too many others that were suitable at the moment.
Anyway it's time I was off to get a good nights sleep before another exciting 10 hour round trip on our wonderful rail network :).

Congrats! Cambridge is a great place, my parents live there and I've lived there on and off over the years.

Part of the problem with property in Cambridge is that the university owns basically everything anywhere near the centre - which is great news if you happen to qualify for university accommodation but a bit of a bummer otherwise.

Still the place to be though :D

What about Bury - St - Edmunds? A cool town, and quite affordable.

Well the property I looked at yesterday wasn't too impressive, however today I've managed to secure myself a large studio-flat, fully furnished and inclusive of bills close to the city centre/train station :). Might not be the cheapest of rents but compared to what I was looking at it's a good place to start, and will make things easier while trying to settle into the new job and getting to know Cambridge.
Unfortunately living on the outskirts or out of town was not really possible as I don't drive so proximity to local transport links was a must, especially as it's a 7-8 mile commute to the science park where the company is based. Maybe I can get a bike and work off the excess pounds of 7 months sitting around the house :).

    Congratulations btw.

Just as you are entering the biotech industry my g/f is exiting it! Still it was good while it lasted.

    Nice one Bl21de3.

Rest assured, if you want to commute places like Bedford/Bury/Peterborough and other places around cambridge are a lot cheaper if you want that in the future.

Congratulations on your new job, hope you settle in and like it as much as Edinburgh.

Well the hifi is in it's boxes :(, so two weeks of relying on my iPod for audio. Everything else is boxed up and ready for shipping. So I'll be back on here in 2-3 weeks time, or sooner it all depends on how draconian the IT monitoring is at the new job. Must admit that I'm looking forward to the new job and having a new city to explore, and new hifi shops to visit :). Anyway thanks for all the encouragement and comments.

Check out The Wrestlers Arms pub on Newmarket Road, heading out from the City centre towards the Airport, and very near to Cambridge City FC. It looks like a normal 'working mans' type spit 'n'sawdust pub and it pretty much is , apart from the fact that the Pub grub is Thai ! The Wrestlers Arms Thai green curry is on of my all time faves. i always make sure i visit at least once whenever i have to either work at, or just visit, my Companies HQ at the Airport. It is also a freehouse selling several real ales, Adnams 'Broadside' usually hits my spot.

That is great to know, Bl21de3 :)
Bio Tech is an excited area to work in. A breakthrough and the rewards are sky high. Is it a quoted company? if so, you will let us know of anything new happening there, won't you? ;)

Cambridge is a great city to live in. It can get a bit touristy, but that means there are always plently of things going on. Lots of nice, big parks to explore too (just watch out for those bl**dy bikes!). Shopping isn't that great (limited selection of shops), and I've never experienced any of the hi-fi shops so can't vouch for those.
