Bottleneck, since you socialized in person with the Mike?s installations, or with the system he sells, then I would lie to ask you a question. How do you feel is Mike?s personal understanding of Sound? The owning of the tools and having the necessary know-hows are not necessary the adequate attributes to be able offering well-sounding solutions. We all build Sound and pursuit the depth of Sound complexity only in context of our understanding of Sound. So, I am very much interested to learn how ?serious? Mike understands Sound, sure, from your personal perspective. Usually looking at what person is TRYING to accomplish with his playback is a good illustration of a person?s intentions and his Sonic depth-seriousness. So, what you feel about Mike?

Romy give Murray johnson a pm, I believe he knows the current state of play regarding the S2's.
Mike's 'proper' job is a modelmaker for Aardman Animation, are you a fan of 'Wallace and Gromit' ? Regards Keith.

Romy, I think you are getting mixed up. Kevin is the guy building and selling these speakers, and I think he produces some of the finest sounds currently available anywhere.

I am Mike, I don't sell loudspeakers, and have absolutely no understanding of the concept of serious sound.

Mike's Sonic depth-seriousness is no greater than 5 metres, and the water is murky and a bit cold.

    Hi Romy

If you mean Kevin, I don't feel able to answer the question. I partly don't understand the question and partly am not sure I have the answer anyway.

Kevin is a very skilled speaker builder, and has the time, budget and expertise to experiment that only the most ardent and wealthy and experienced novice could emulate.

Further views on what his prototypes sound like would surely get lost in the translation of language.

Certainly, its the best sound I've heard yet to date. Beyond that it's a question of personal preference.

    Bottleneck,

I do not think you don't understand the question but rather it was the question that is not commonly asked and people do not always equipped or wiling to deal with this question. I know who Mike the Vitavox is and I spoke with him multiple times. Still the point reminds open: how serious Mike about Sound. I do not know the answer and therefore I asked.

I use S2 and I know that I am a quite heavy player with this driver. However, I do not support the brands paranoia or label-praying, I?m not audio archeologist but the audio practitioner and therefore I wonder if Mike juts replicated the old S2 in order to keep the Morons? with eBay monikers instead of ears happy or if he went for building a BETTER NEW S2 drivers as the old S2 had quite a number of moments that might be dramatically improved. As I said: I recognize ?seriousness? as the level of intentions.

    Hi Romy

Mike = Stereo Mic right here on Zerogain, Definitive Audio & Living Voice = Kevin Scott.. totally different people :)

This is the living voice website.

    http://www.livingvoice.co.uk/home.htm

I'm not sufficiently aware of the in's and out's of Kevin's work on the S2 to say what changes he has made to the original S2 drive unit.

I know that he has worked with Vitavox somewhat, and bought castings/rights and other bits and pieces and is therefore able to make the S2 from scratch.

He's not a DIY builder or a part of the DIY community. He is a proffessional speaker builder - he's therefore unlikely to want to discuss the changes he's made here or there in the development of his products.

I think you are or I?m confused and let clear it out.

When I referred to ?Mike the Vitavox? I was talking about Mike Harvey. Mike runs an Octave Audio shop in a Bristol, UK and he was the guy who inherited all Vitavox tools and documentation, and he was the guy who from my point of view knew something about the Vitavox?s guts. I was under a presumption that if I knew Vitavox S2 become available then it will be available due to Mike Harvey?s efforts. He told me about his intentions to do it even 7-8 years ago. The Definitive Audio, the Living Voice or Kevin Scott? I have no idea who they are (in Vitavox context) and I never referred to them.

Looking from US? New England I might be wrong, and if it is the cases then please correct me. You Brits are always were confusing like hell?

Anyhow, what is important to me is to learn is not the difference between Kevin Scott and Mike Harvey but to learn are who is the person, or the group of the people, who are behind all of new production of S2 driver. And what is even more interesting for me is to hear some subjective assessments about how those Vitavox new authors are capable to assess and to navigate Sound with a sober seriousness. It's all.

Romy Hi,I am sure i will be corrected if I am mistaken, but I believe Mike Harvey and Kevin Scott are working together on the project, Kevin has been using S2's for years , in a prototype/pre production speaker. I would have thought the first step would be to accurately reproduce the 'sound' of the original S2 before thinking about any 'improvements'. Keith.

If it is so then it makes me very wondering. Flowing the link the Living Voice has it?s flagman models ?Air Partner? and ?Airscout?. They are obviously the cotemporary design. However, making those speakers Kevin Scott employed for MF the Vitavox RN330 idea (Altec, Klipsh etc), without rethinking it. That was very poor decision as that type of horns sound horrible and they were one of the few reasons that gave to horn-load idea it?s bad reputation in the minds of public. I hope redoing their ?new? S2 drivers Mike Harvey and Kevin Scott will be more liberal with the label-addiction and will be more respectful to the actual Sound?

Many audiphiles who heard Living Voice horns would obviously disagree with your implication that they sound horrible, without a prior listening.

    Or am I wrong here?

    anubisgrau,

Yes you are wrong and please do not put words in my mouth. I did not imply that Living Voice sounds ?horrible? but I said that the typology of the MF horn that this speaker used is very inferior (horrible) and for anyone who played with many differed horns is it not a secret how this type of horns sound. This is well researched subject and particularly in the case of ?Air Partner. You might not know me but I assure you that bringing argumentation like ?someone head them and liked it? is not something that makes me worry. I can bring you a crowd of people who heard Krell or Kharma and who pledge that they ?do not sound horrible?? So what?

I don't see what Kharma or Krell have to do with a habit to give bold conclusions about products without prior listening, especially as we are not talking about £100 plastic speakers. You didn't state that Living Voice horns are horrible but the horn used in Living Voice can't sound otherwise than horrible. No need to go into higher semantics to understand the message, unless it is possible that the sum of horribly sounding elements can sound non-horrible?

What I would expect from a serious person here is to stick with the conclusions proven by his/her ears, measurements or whatever practical, experimental or other empirical method rather than anticipation, imagination or theory. Both you and Keith in this case are writing about speakers you haven't heard so I found it completely normal to rather trust those ears who listened them, at the moment - until you join them. That would be another story and I would be more than pleased to hear your opinion based on listening experience, considering that your knowledge in horns is so deep.

I disagree. The relevancy of the people who provide exuberant feedback about sound of Kharma or Krell loudspeakers is very important. You or others might feel that the rectangular horns with a symmetric profile do sound acceptable, good for you. There are also people who prize the sound of Altec 19 or Altec 7, feeling that they are free from shortcomings. A really have no reason to argue this point as I do not feel that ?others? might have properly developed ?objective audio assessment techniques?, and also because the definition of success in audio productive methods is contingent upon the level of involvement into what I call ?audio seriousness?. By the way, that was exactly the reason why I joined that this threat asking from the people who presumably know they knew Vitavox owners (I presume it is Mile unless she recently sold his rights to Kevin) about their audio seriousness.

Then. You mistakably understand the adjective ?horrible? which coming from my mouth in a regards to horn design. I certainly do not propose to castrate without anastasia any individual who use the rectangular Altec-type horns. However, do not forget that for any frequency range of a given channel there are WAY more interning solution then the Altec-type horns and those solutions make the Altec-based channels if not ?horrible? but at least NOT acceptable.

Aslo. There is something in the subject that allows to make collusions with surprising degree of accuracy without actually listening one or an other implementation and that is what calls ?experience?. In today world when everyone have access on-line and everyone could construct empty sentences about audio everyone has ?experience?. In really very few people ever put the legwork in beyond juts getting ?some kind of sound?. Whatever you do in audio works and the key is to make audio to do what is necessary. Here is where only minority people can operate and have necessary mindset to use audio as an expressive tool instead of getting from audio ?residues of random actions?. This is why I more care about who the person is instead of take under assumption what kind crap she or he were able to accumulate in his listening room. Do not forget: any technology or tool in the hands of barbarian produce barbarian result

I did not hear your Living Voice and I do not comment on them. I might and it WILL NOT be very far from very accurate description of their sound. However, I have no specific interest to do it, partially among the people who wiling to turn blind the undeniable fact in his pursue to the brand?s loyalty. BTW, if to dig deeper then there are many reasons WHY the accrual listening (other then owning) might not really be necessary for objectivism but it is too deep subject that might be overwritten by ?targeted listening?. Hm, Am I too in love to be cryptic? Good for me?

i'm fine with everyone's paranormal abilites as long as they stay a private thing or in tarkovski's films. in this topic it is still murray johnson, bottleneck, stereo mic, lilolee and few others whose word has simply more weight because it is not based on speculations.
