We're really pleased that SCIDB aka Dean has taken up the mantle of moderator. Be nice to him chaps, and remember that he has a record collection to die for. In fact I'm hoping he'll DJ for a ZG party soon. He'll bring all the tunes.

    Hi All,

I thought I'd have a go at being a moderator. I have been on Zerogain since the start. I have seen the ups and downs, the good and the bad, the nice and the nasty.

I have been into hifi since the late 70s when my older brother bought a hifi magazine home. I remember reading it and not understanding a word of it! From there the interest grew.

I got my first proper system in 1981 with some money from a saving plan that had matured. Over the years I have owned many bits and bobs.

I have spent most of my life in the education field. A good chunk of it working in a science department in a university. This included acoustic and vibration work. I'm now a science teacher.

I have also had my hand in the hifi retail field. I have worked as a saturday boy for my local hifi shop in the past. From this I have meet a number of people in the many fields of the hifi industry. I have made a number of good friends from it.

My education has been many in the science, technology and electronic field which has meant that I have dabbled with tweaking bits of kit and building various items in the past.

Since the late 80s, I have been a dj and worked in the entertainment field in my spare time. I have worked at a number of venues over the years.

I have been interested in music since the late 60s when I can remember listening to and dancing to my parents ska and reggae records. I grew up in a house of music, we had two radiograms in those days.

My brothers and I learnt to play various instruments throughout our childhoods. I wasn't very good or very keen at the time and soon dropped out but my other brothers were. So the house was full of people playing various styles of music.

I grew up in the 70s hearing all the pop music of the day. I used to listen to the radio alot from the begining of local commercial radio, Radio One and Radio Luxemberg. Throughout the 70s, I developed a big love of black american music but I did like to listen to other styles. I did watch as many pop music programes on the tv as possible. I was a keen follower of Top of the Pops.

It took quite an interest in the music of punk and new wave in around 77/78 as my old brother was buying these records as well as a lot of funk, soul and disco.

I didn't buy many record at first. The first one I bought was a Showaddywaddy single, "Sweet Music" in 1975. (I still have it!). I didn't really start buying on a regular basis till 1978 when I was 13. I had more money then.

I was into the disco scene at the time, then into the Two tone scene in the latter part of the 70s. Also in the late 70s, I listened more to the evening shows on radio one and to John Peel this helped increase my out look.

The first gig I went to, on my own, was to see the Selector at Sheffield Polytechnic in 1980. I won some tickets from a competition in the local paper. Very enjoyable.

In the 80s, I left school, went the college, then down to Leicester Polytechnic. I choose Leicester because it had good access back to Sheffield and they seemed to put on decent bands.

Throughout the 80s, I built up my record collections buying from various records and charity shops along the way. As well as new and recent stuff, I bought old stuff from my childhood and youth.

Having been buying vinyl for years and I have a house full of records and cds.

Got to dash, I've got a lesson to teach.

Welcome to our new Disco Overlord.

But doesn't this mean ZG now has more moderators than ordinary posters? :)

Congratulations Dean. An excellent choice for mod IMHO (and pay no attention to SSB, he's just miffed because no one has ever asked him to be a mod ;-) )

Strangely enough, I was asked once, but my anarchist principles prevented me from accepting. I'd be a terrible mod though.

To paraphrase Groucho Marx I wouldn't want to be a moderator on any forum that would have me as a moderator.

    Well done that man.

That sounds a really interesting past. :)

Does "black american music" mean blues?

I have a passion for this....if i hadn't got interested in hifi bits, I'd be playing the stuff!

Your background in acoustics +vibrations etc also sounds really good.

    :)

I suspect black american music means just what it says on the tin. It's a much misunderstood artform, much bigger than just the blues. It would include Gospel, Dixie, Jazz and a whole load more

Plus soul, funk, fusion, disco, rap, R&B, Detroit techno etc etc - in fact about 90% of everything that can be described as original American art.

I believe that almost of the above can be traced back to the black folk/religious music that developed because of the slave trade. The influence of Gospel music pervades what might be called black music. I suspect the Caribbean has more of an influence on Rap and street music that has grown up in the States though.

Anyway who said that America's great contribution to world culture was Mickey Mouse :)

most of these styles are modern(ish).....

....the blues (IIRC) deveolped from negro spirtuals from the depression years of 1930s.....so was possibly here first!

..doesn't make anything right or wrong.....just wonder if stuff especially like R+B (not to be confuse iwth the origional rhythm and blues), soul and possible funk deveolped from the blues?
