Ignoring the issue as to whether or not you think they are worth listening to, releasing your new album for download at a 'you decide' price is an interesting turn.

Further demarcation between mass consumption and audiophilia or just an attempt to pre-empt the file-sharers - i.e. the inevitable? What's a stadium straddling colossus to do eh?

I'll wait for the vinyl !

As far as mainstream music goes they could pack up now and release the same stuff in ten years when everyone else has caught up.

AFAIK there's been no mention of a standalone Vinyl issue - only the 'box' and a 2008 standalone single CD.

I'd assumed the standalone vinyl would also have a 2008 release.
I've ordered the "discbox". And also tried the download just to see if they'd accept £0.00.... which they did!

Has anyone heard anything about the album? Such as which direction it might be taking?

Why did you order the Download? You get it on Oct 10th anyway if you order the box. Or was it just curiosity about the price?

There are live concert versions of practically the whole thing circulating - search YouTube. Alternatively the 'Rolling Stone' website has links for most of it. I ordered the box and I'd rather wait and see - it's only a week to wait for the download anyway.

Yep, like I said, just curious to see if they'd accept £0.00, or if it had to be a minimum of 1p.

yeah, I read today that they're letting the individual buyer decide on how much it's worth...you still have to register so thay can spam you but it's a small price to pay!

It interesting to consider whether we are about to enter an era where recorded music is a mere advert for the live spectacular. As bands make less and less money from their recordings I suppose it is only to be expected - Live music is much better any way!

yeah, unless they're admitted defeat in the war against piracy and are looking into different ideas...

radiohead have already sold 20 million albums so I guess it's a riskj they can take...but newer bands..? I doubt it...

It will be interesting if that's the way they intend to go.

Big bands make big money from touring but I've always heard that small / medium bands mainly do so to promote their albums as the costs of touring negate the profits until you get to a sizeable venue

Does anyone have any experience of being in a band? How much cash would you actually make from say a 500 ticket sold out gig, at 15 quid a pop with rented PA and a road crew to look after?

it harks back to the OK Computer style rather than the more experimental recent stuff, but I have to say I find it a bit dreary and sameish.

imo it's more a continuation of "hail to the thief" than "ok"

yes, fair point - I was probably thinkng back to Kid A and Amnesiac, which I really liked. I bought Hail but haven't really listened to it that much.

I guess it's always difficult for a band knowing how far to evolve from a trademark style or sound. I admired Bjork's early albums as they were all quite different but still recognisably Bjork - but then she started churning out completely barking stuff whic just turned me off. On the other hand another singer I like, PJ Harvey, did evolve somewhat album to album but then came out with 'Uh huh her' which sounded like a parody, it was so self-derivative. But then again her latest, White Chalk, is so completely different that I'm not sure I'll listen to it more than a couple of times.
