well I am having a downscale, clearing some stuff out, and the proacs have been sold, so....

what do I replace them with?

Its really a total rethink, so I am open to lots of things, tho I don't have much to spend atm, perhaps £300-500.(perhaps at the lower end of the scale, I suppose that means fairly mainstream makes)

A 40 watt valve amp will be driving, so nothing TOO troublesome.

    Any suggestions?

a little pair of near field monitors then?

    Some JR149s/Ls3-5a?
    Epos ES11?
I liked listening to AE1's when I had a small bedroom as a listening room.
Those Ribbon tweetered Aurums on cattylink?

I like detail and sacrifice the bass myself in small rooms.

    Each to their own though!

Spendor S3/5s are great in small rooms and can be picked up for your budget second hand

    Hi Ian,

Why don't you try a pair of Snell K Loudspeakers. These are quite high sensitivity speakers with an easy load with doped paper drivers. Also the Audionote K loudspeakers are based on these.

These speakers are good bookshelf items that will suit your room and your valve amps.

Agree, Snell K's are excellent, try a listen to MK1 Rega Ela's too.

Kef Q1? 91db sensitivity, reasonable bass for a diddler. I heard its predecessor the Q15.2 when I git my Q55s and was impressed for the money. The Q drivers do a pretty good job and don't create much of a hot spot. Might be too cheap though ;) They're only about £220 new and I guess £300 could buy you a lot more, especially 2nd hand.

Kef Reference Series seem pretty good value SH, RF2s go for about £500 with 1s at about £350-400

    Hi,

What are you looking for? Is size an issue? Can you manage Sub/Satellite arrangements? How about a Spot of (quite minimal) DIY?

You can PM me if you want.

A default recommendation of mine is to track down a pair of 2nd Hand Epos ES-14, can't find these try a pair of ES/M12. Add a Sub to taste. That should actually be a notable upgrade.

    Ciao T

I've got two pairs of Rega Elas which I'm about to eBay, if you're interested.
