New standmounters for up to £4000?

I reccomend the expressions too, these things can do loud, I reccomended them on 't'other forum but thats 3 votes here, are you still selling yours N24?
 
I use my Harbeth C7's pretty close to the back wall (a few inches) and they sound sublime to my ears. On the bass side I'd say full and deep but not overblown.

I'd also add that they are one of the finest speakers I've heard and definitely worth an audition.

surely 4k is too much to spend on a standmount?

Yes AK i am still selling mine, hopefully to crusty, and then it is on to the V8's when I find the extra cash.

I was thinking the same thing, particularly if the rest of your system is an Arcam CD33T and MF A308 :duck:

....I'd spend £2K on new standmounts and £2K upgrading the rest.

Chris the expressions are worth every penny, (the top half of mine)however they can be had s/hand for a lot less, not easy to find though. Can't comment on wether the others are worth it though, didn't think the mini utopia was worth it soundwise, but had fantastic build. wether it's worth it in the context of the above kit is not for us to decide.

Well, I guess the logic is that standmount's are going to be less problematic because they can be backed up against a wall... That's not something I'd assert to be generally true as I'm sure I could find a lot of moderate sized boxes that won't work in that position in my room. That kind of speaker position is a bit of a gamble on room/position and speaker model, and is likely to be a recipe for disaster with speakers with half decent bass. Bigger boxes/floor standers are only likely to make matters worse (easier to get more bass).

I suppose the other thing that skewers the deal is that most speakers are designed to be freestanding (radiate into 4pi). naim speakers (and the Linn Kan/Sara/Isobarilks) which are designed to be backed up against a wall (radiate into 2pi) and are bass shy otherwise, hopefully this won't prompt the original poster into the clutches of those cultists:)

A possible way out of this conundrum of big speakers against a wall is Tact pre-amp, but this isn't something I've tried, and I don't know the price of an RSC 2.0/2.X in the UK. Merlin?

I'd cheerfully assert that the Tact isn't sensitive to jitter, so any cheap cd/dvd player would do to spin the disks. And I'd be inclined to go with ATC Active 20's because that eliminates the amp selecton problem.

harbeths, yes they do have a bass hump, seen a graph, they also have a treble one, too!!

they are a bit like the loudness curve.
strange I found the c7's quite forward, yet Alan Shaw says he doen'st like forwardness, still a top speaker.

Von Schweikert. The VR-1's I presume. I have a pair. Lovely looking and sounding. Big sound. Replaced my A-P Sparks and I'm very happy with em ! (Well I would say that wouldn't I :D )
