I would appreciate some advice on a new turntable arm, I am currently using an SME iii on a Luxman PD300. Shure cartridge fitted. I am considering a Jelco arm sa 250a any thoughts appreciated.Had considered a modded Rega or if I can lay my hands on a Tecno arm. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Hi Colin,

Just about anything will sound better then the SMEIII.
Great looking arm and very easy to customise for different cartridges but it sounds dynamically flat and soft compared to many other arms.
Any Rega RB arm would sound far superior as would the Tecno.
I've never used the Jelco but have heard something almost identical badged under other names. It too should prove better than the SME.

Sorry sent that last message before I had finished. As I was going to say I know I can pick up many Rega derivatives and mod them.Thought Jelco would be a good alternative but also thought the Spall kit might be interesting. Just wondered if anyone had any other reasonably priced alternatives.

SMEIIIs bring good money - ceretainly well north of £150 so that makes upgrade free or nearly free.

You may want to check a Nottingham Analogue arm (Space/Mentor), a Syrinx, an Helius or a Hadcock. Incredible performers that sometimes can be found at a very low cost in the UK.

Lovely table you've got there, btw.Absolutely worth to throw money on. Sure you'll be rewarded.

    Regards,

    Hi,

    Nice looking deck

I would agree with trying a Rega or derivatives would be a way to go. They are plentiful and can be cheap.

I love the turntable and whats even better is that it is in pristine condition, with the SME it sounded really good I preferred it to my Notts Spacedeck and I have always preferred "normal" looking decks ie square with wood. I will remove the SME and check fitting to see what will suit the deck. Loved the Spacearm but there will not be many cheap ones about. The "bling" Spall arm appeals.

Need some help here, I currently have a Luxman pd300 with an sme cut arm mount. I wantt o mount a Rega , pre 3 point fixing, so what I want to do is either get a new arm mount made, any suggestions, or has someone got the template so I can get an sme mount made at the right height with just a single hole for fixing the REGA. Any thoughts on this would help.

Audio Origami rewired and foam filled RB250 sounds really good, but I am biased as I use one on my Rock.
