AFAIK, AC/DC have not produced a greatest hits/ best of / restrospective album. Strikes me as unusual for a band of their stature not to have done so. Obviously there's the Bon Scott/ Johnson divide but even so.....

Can't really think of many , if indeed any, bands that have failed to do so.

Retrospective greatest hits type sets from both, the Beatles one was a record company inspired thing? And I think Page compiled the Zeppelin ones. AC/DC's nearest thing to a compilation of their greatest hits would surely be the box set?

    Beatles - 1's
Led Zeppelin - Early Days/Latter Days

At least they haven't gone over the top, in the last 18 months or so I think Aerosmith released two different greatest hits albums, not to mention there was already Big Ones, Greatest Hits Live and a couple of others. They must hold the record for most Best of's?

The Beatles/ Zep ones were once the bands were defunct though.

Maybe its time for an Aerosmith "best of the best of" :D

True enough, didn't see any mention in your original post that the band had still to be going. Don't suppose Zeppelin felt that the live stuff from The Song Remains The Same would count? It's the nearest thing anyway.

I think that crown should be contested by country bumpkin Dolly Parton. Here is the best randomly generated ultimate run down of her all time greatest hits:

    Ultimate Dolly Parton - BMG
    The Ultimate Collection - RCA
The Best of Dolly Parton - Camden
    Super Hits - Sony
    Legendary - BMG
The Essential Dolly Parton Vol.1 - RCA
The Essential Dolly Parton Vol.2 - RCA
    Super Hits - Imports
    Super Hits - RCA
    Greatest Hits - RCA
    The Collection - RCA
    Gold - Commercial
    Legends - Camden
The Best of Dolly Parton - Paradiso
    Greatest Hits - Camden
    Ultimate Collection - Imports
    Greatest Hits - Telstar

This little sparrow, I believe, is hungry again for the honkey tonk angel in my Tennessee mountain home. I am told the grass is blue there.....

hehe, that is total overkill... Cynic that I am, I'd wage money (if I had any) that there's probably only about 10 tracks that don't feature on each and every one of them.

What about Led Zep remasters 1990 2 cd/lp boxed set which I think is what early days/latter years is :D

An interesting question (to me) on a banned band with not only no greatest hits but no hits whatsoever - the Dave Clark Five. They were very big when I was a teenager 'way back in the long ago, but I know of no band that has disappeared so completely. Not, I hasten to add, that I want any of their stuff, which was generally rather ordinary, but when I see CD sales, I see many '60s bands - but never DC5.

Clark may not have been much of a drummer, but he was apparently a tremendous entrepreneur, and he insisted on complete control over everything - writing, producing, recording, managing. As a result, the DC5 became fabulously wealthy, and they blazed a trail for the others (Beatles, Stones, etc. ) to follow. I'd heard that the music industry has never forgiven this destruction of the old structure, and as a result, the music sank without trace. Anyone know whether there's any truth to it?

When did The Story of The Clash come out? Was that while they were still together or after they split? Likewise, Clash on Broadway box-set, if they'd split by the time those were released then surely they'd fit nicely into the "no greatest hits" category?
