The CDM4 in the CD16 is the only other mech I've ever used which is neck and neck with the Sony's that I've used in terms of TOC reading and random track search speed. :MILD:

Its still making an irritating whizzy noise. Good job i can't hear it through cans. I tried various things last night to no avail. I'm 99% its A1, just cheap and noisy. I'll dynamat the buggery out of it soon, see if that helps.

not having a good hifi week :(

this marantz is doing my nut. so i'm gonna bin it, and buy a new transport.

the sx-1250 that i was raving about a while back has subsequently blown up, in quite dramatic fashion. i was a cats whisker away from attacking it with a fire extinguisher. the costs and aggro involved in getting it fixed up to its former glories are not insignificant. its still wholly worth it IMO, but i don't know if i can be arsed now.

so to console myself, i bought another tasty bit of vintage:

    and some cans:

so it ain't all doom and gloom.

Well, I mustn't take the piss too much, as I am having my own problems. The dpa is nearing the end of its life I fear, I had to perform emergency surgery yesterday to keep it alive. The prognosis is not too good for the long term.

If it goes up in a mushroom cloud of stenching smoke, with a hint of flame, give me a shout, and i'll be round with my extinguisher :D

that's bad news though :( how much would the repair bill be though to get it sorted proper?.......or do you fancy a dac64 for christmas ;) :D

Thats the problem, I dont really know if it is going to be repairable as dpa are no more, and it is a bugger to fix due to the unique circuits and the SMT components. I am not sure its worth shelling out anything on it.

A DAC64 for christmas? Possibly, I'll think about it. Probably going to aim a little higher though:D

    LOL,

that wasnt meant to come across as slagging the dac64, It's just that this time I will probably end up with one of the big boys as a replacement. We'll see what happens.

You watch, I'll have Parry trying to sell me his CDS2 soon:D

I hope so Robbo, all this middle management 'Impreza' type gear kicking about, it's enough to make a grown man, brake out his red braces :D
I feel Robbo has already selected ' A suitable replacement' for the dpa, still those lovely blue glowing lights, will give some to look at while reaching for the ear plugs :duck:

Sorry to hear that. SX-1250 and that vintage site got me facinated and I was thinking of getting something similar.

Now, I will be content with just looking at the pics
    :(

you just have to be prepared to renovate something of this age, or better still buy something which has already been done (at a premium - and quite rare in this country). i didn't expect this one to blow up straight away, but it was always going to need renovating, if it was to sound anywhere near its best. Even if it works, it will still only be in 2nd gear, something of this age, without an overhaul.

i'm no diyer either, so its a case of finding someone else to do the work. If you can do it yourself, it can be done cheaper, and in stages much easier.

i'm currently 'negotiating' (with a baseball bat in my left hand) with the seller, for a refund. although i have been in touch with a guy who would be prepared to buy it even in its 'chargrilled' state. he already has one, and out of the two can make a mint one. or i'll keep it, drop the seller from a fourth story window, and then go about a gradual rebuld myself, through a couple of trustworthy individuals i have encountered in this vintage odysey.

i'm still sad though :( it was a sight to behold  and that was before i dialled 999 ;)

don't let it put you off bluemax :)

There is a veteran TV engineer here with electronics experience going back to even before the TVs! But unfortunately he can't do much these days due to arthritis :(
From your previous post, the seller seems to be a trader. So you might have a case under the Sales of Goods Act.
