    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could compare and contrast between these 2 well-known TTs? I feel like an upgrade coming =)

    Thanks in advance.

I'd go for a Space deck over any of the Michell offerings (including an Orbe fitted with SME V!) - though the Kuzma Stabi/stogi combo is very good value indeed at about £1200 (it also beat the Orbe IMHO..)

Thanks for the replies... I was comparing the Gyrodec to the SpaceDeck.

Is the Nottingham better in every way? I heard they just have different presentation to the music...

I too would take space over gyro. I don't know if its better in every way, perhaps the michel is a little more detailed but the notts really plays music.

one uses mass loading and one is suspended.

personally I think that really characterises the sound of each.

you've got to listen to see which you prefer.

by the way for NAS owners -

I've just seen a second hand wave mechanic :-

    http://www.audioconsultants.co.uk/
    in the 'used' section.

theres also a spacedeck used aswell - with an SME arm board.

there is nothing 'wrong' with the gyro. i have had nothing but absolute pleasure from mine. now up graded to gorb and hr. saying that, i'd still happily have a spacedeck.
it's nice to be spoilt for choice with a couple of genuinely excellent british products - don't you think?

actually, it seems that a lot of the new boys in the TT arena have kind of copied the michell or rega look so if i was starting from scratch i'd probably go for the space as it at least looks different.

    fickle ain't i?

There is a collection of TT's around this price bracket in the April's HiFi World. Even if you take no notice of reviews, it will give you a general idea of what they are all about before you listen. Those included are...

Roksan Xerxes 10 £1100, Notts Analogue Spacedeck £1250, Michell Gyro SE/HR £1270, Acoustic Solid Small Royal £1280, Origin Live Aurora Gold 2 £1470, Martin Bastin Garrard 401 £1200 (approx).

    Regards,

    Ah-haaa!

This debate brings back memories. Back in about 1996 this was exactly my dilema. I listened carefully to both the Michell Gyrodec (Export edition), with standard RB300 tonearm (can't remember what cartridge was initially fitted).

I compared this to the Nottingham Spacedeck and felt that each performed exceptionally well, however at the time while I think the Nottingham did more of what I liked a fraction better I opted for the Gyrodec for reasons relating to it having a proper dustcover keeping if free from airborn particles and from (at the time), my very young daughters fingers!

The Gyrodec became my staple diet for the next four-years at least with it getting the QC power supply and a re-worked Rega RB900 tonearm with Ortofon MC3000 II cartridge.

    Good times :MILD:

HFW always rave about Origin Live but they don't get mentioned much on forums, which would suggest there aren't that many around - why is this?

I've heard this one before, it can only be one of two things really can't it? Either their products really are very good and none of us lot has sat up and taken notice (except David Price of HFW), or... they are struggling and 'somehow' their gear is being 'pushed'.

Too be honest, their kit looks really well thought out and well made. But mores to your point, anyone here own any OL gear and care to comment???

I did the NAS v Gyro thing a couple of months ago. I'd owned a Michell for the last 13 years, having upgraded from an LP12, and felt like a change; actually the addition of a new family member more like, so needed a TT which could be shelf-mounted - the Gyro's a bit too big and bouncy.

To cut a long story etc etc the Spacedeck was a significant improvement on the Gyro - tonally richer, faster, punchier and plays tunes like its life depended on it. That's not to say the Michell's not good - it served me very well for all those years, and was upgraded to DC/HR spec etc etc.

To say I'm a happy NAS customer would be a bit of an understatement. :)

Aye, it plays music as opposed to retrieving data from a record!
But just imagine if you'd bought a Verdier :JPS:

as i read it, everyone has claimed the spacedecks' superiority over the michell.

is it therefore time to start saying the gyro is yesterdays news or are we still of the opinion that it is gvfm. as the nottingham is less expensive i can't see how this can still be the case.

Hmmm... interesting reaction as I thought the Gyro was the more popular. I suppose to only way to find out is to have a demo... I am actually trying to get a VPI scoutmaster or Aires 2, only because they do look much much cooler =)

True, but so do many other companies.

I had a very bad experience with OL once before but would not judge their current build quality on what I saw back then. Saying that the experience would never allow me to buy their products again no matter how good they are now.
