Thought we could have a film equivalent of the 'Currently Spinning' thread on the music page.

I watched the When We Were Kings documentary at the weekend. Atmospheric and inspiring film using archive material and interviews to tell the story of the 'Rumble In The Jungle' fight in Zaire between Ali and Foreman. Some great footage and interesting characters with the incredible energy of Ali make it an absorbing watch and makes you realise why this guy is a legend in and out of the ring.
I haven't seen the Will Smith film Ali but have a sneaking suspicion you're better off watching this to understand the man and his time.
My girlfriend who hates boxing managed to watch it all aswell as there isn't that much actual boxing footage, hence it appeals to those who don't enjoy the sport.

I finaly managed to get round to watching return of the king.

I'd seen the first two in the cinema, and own all three on "Special Extended DVD Edition", but had never got round to watching the DVDs. So I watched the first two again, then the third - not all in one go! Maybe it was partly down to LOTR fatigue, but I found the third less involving and fun than the first two. Still a great watch, and needs to be seen for completion, but a bit of a let down.

    Carnivale - Series 1

Check out the reviews on Amazon, they sum it up quite nicely.

If you like HBO and you liked Twin Peaks ( It has the dwarf FROM Twin Peaks in it ) you'll love it.

Lent to me and now I'm going to have to buy it.

Just started Firefly (Joss Whedon's post Buffy sci-fi which failed and got killed after the one series) and so far enjoyed the first 3 episodes.

Got Aviator and Man On Fire to watch this weekend.

Sounds intriguing. I've seen Burns' documentaries on the West and the American Civil War, which are landmarks, but never got around to seeing Jazz. I'm also saving the pennies up for 'Martin Scorsese presents The Blues' boxset.

Another great music doc which people might want to catch is America Roots Music, a 2 DVD set, which covers everything FROM blues to gospel to country and cajun.

Magnolia last night. Such a great film....an absorbing catatonic story so well put together and told it leaves you watching with a slack jaw. Literally...I was stunned when I first watched this. Some great performances notably FROM Cruise and William H Macy, strong characters, beautifully shot and the music keeps a feeling of tension bubbling all through the film. The music is great with Aimee Mann supplying most of the score with some inspired use of Supertramp in there aswell. The scene with Supertramps Logical Song is just superb.
Must be seen this one. Its an absolute gem. A little long at just over 3 hours so get comfy.

Agree with you completely. Absorbing FROM beginning to end. Cruise's performance by far the best thing he has ever done, and ever will, I suspect.

We've got the Cable Guy coming round later today to install 2 more boxes - if he's like Jim Carey's one, I'm running, screaming. That film really fierced me out - he was plain scarily nasty in that!

BTW - last film I saw - "Dukes of Hazzard" - gets a two thumbs up FROM me - way cool! Last one on DVD was "The girl next door" - yum yum!

Went to see 'Land of the Dead' today. Now I love Zombie movies and I was concerned when the new 'Dawn' movie had high speed zombs. However, I feel they were right to do that. Watching 'Land' was ok but it lacked all the tension and moments of true frenzy that the new 'Dawn' had. In fact 'Land' comes across as really old fashioned. Pretty enjoyable but only a few jump moments.

Much better than 'Day of the Dead' though.

Two Nicholson films this weekend. The Missouri Breaks. Good western with Marlon Brando....and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Great film. I think I rate Jack as my favourite actor. Every film I've seen him in has been great. Got so much screen presence and is naturally funny and engaging. Infact I think its virtually impossible not to like him although my office buddy here can't stand him....I'm going to interrogate him about it now...

A fewmates went to see Land of the Dead the otherday and seemed to think the same. Watchable, but nothing great. They did say though, that there's a good touch in the way the zombies seem to have some sort of awareness/intelligence  (something about a garage attendent?).
The original Dawn was on the other night too. Still a good un, but ultimatley, it's a bit dated now. I loved the remake, and agree with you on the high speed zombies, much like 28 days later t'was a good twist.

Oh, and the mates who went to see Day of the Dead, said the best bit was the trailer for the upcoming Doom MOvie :D
