What is it with pubs/clubs these days!? I was out somewhere recently with one of the Indiana Jones films on in the background. Its too distracting though! A TV in the pub always sucks peoples attention....or maybe I'm too dull:rolleyes: :D

Saw 'Click' the other day - not much to choose FROM with a 12 year old in tow. Better than I'd been led to believe FROM reviews, although Adam Sandler was so flat that appeared to be getting his lines FROM autocue. Kate Beckinsale looks stunning but completely anodine in that desexed, antiseptic American way - shame she sold out and went all Hollywood; she had a lot of promise as a proper actress in her early years.

Not a film but a series. Garth Marenghis Darkplace. Must see for any fan of great British comedy like The Office, Peepshow etc. Spoof supernatural thriller SHOW FROM the 80's set in a hospital. Very silly but very funny.
I'm still chuckling about Skipper the Eye Child a couple of weeks after watching it!

completely agree with you about tv's in pubs.
are people scared of watching telly alone?

tv is for home, pubs are for fun

cos i like to stay in and watch tv, on my own, every now and then

unexpectedly enjoyed "crash" last week...most surprising

Went to see the new Bond film last night. Very enjoyable I thought. The opening title graphics really got it off to a good start and Daniel Craig was really good as Bond. Some great action sequences and some quite funny bits too. Did get a bit overly soppy in some places and could maybe have benefitted FROM some closer editing but all in all a pretty enjoyable film.

My thoughts exactly! Good film, but a bit flabby in places. Could do with losing about ten minutes on the cutting floor. Craig was excellent and the one-liners were superb.

Watched 'A Life Aquatic' the other day starring Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Cate Blanchett. Bloody awful film I thought. Mainly I think because I've finally had it with Bill Murray being a one trick pony. He again plays that kind of arrogant, aloof, selfish totally unlikeable character. I can't see the attraction? It worked ok in Groundhog Day and Scrooged because he was supposed to be playing an arrogant, aloof, selfish totally unlikeable character but does he have to bring the same act to every role!? It kind of gave the film an air about it that it was made with the same attitude, that some washed up film makers had decided to make a film without any passion to do so.

It was saved to some extent by some good Bowie renditions thrown in every so often but other than that. Avoid.

hmm yeah...that was actually on my list of films to watch but I might now skip it given my recent realisation that Bill Murray is awful. Presumeably he's playing an arrogant, aloof, selfish and totally unlikeable character!!? Or maybe just several of the above traits.

For me I'd say it's in my top 20 favourite films, more because I'm a fan of some of the actors rather than not see it for being an anti-fan of Bill Murray. You shouldn't miss it unless you really can't stand the risk of a disappointment; the potential upside if you like it is so great (IMHO)

I picked up the Cronenberg film 'A History Of Violence' in Tesco for a couple of quid the other day. I throughly enjoyed it. I've not watched many of his films but realise that this is much more of a straight up film than his usual offerings. Its an hour and a half of good paced thriller action with the added depth that a quality director brings to such stories. Some very strong characters in there. Ed Wood is great in it as is Mortenson but the whole cast is spot on really. I'd heard some of the violence was pretty brutal so I chose to watch it alone but it isn't too bad really. Just a bit different to your average action film as Cronenberg was trying to present an image of 'real life' violence rather than the glorified violence of most movies. Well worth a watch.

Also enjoyed Kill Bill vol 1 on TV last night. Really is so well done. The anime sequence is great and the whole film has such a good balance of typical kung fu film action, comedy and story. Tarantino has such style. Together with Vol 2 they're a great piece of work.

The Aviator, I thought it was very good, I must confess I even nearly like DeCraprio.

Miss Beckinsale looked fantastic as always

I watched The Player with Tim Robbins last night. It won several awards at Cannes but I've got to say it hasn't aged well. Its directed by Robert Altman so I thought it would be quite good. Which it kind of is but it looks like its made by amateurs. The sound and cinematograhy is pretty bad. Not an easy film to watch because there seems to be lots of background noise and some scenes are quite unfocused. I like the idea but I imagine it could have been done better and with better sense of tension. I think maybe its well liked because people think its a good old dig in the shins of Hollywood. Which it does do well but could have been done better if it had been a slicker production.

Also, on the front cover there is a comment from the Daily Mirror saying something like "You'll be crying with laughter". I've no idea why they said that as I only chuckled a couple of times. I guess the journo wanted to point out that he had got all the in jokes about Hollywood films. I think I missed out on quite a bit of that.

The Player is a tour de force of cinematography technique, how long is the opening sequnece? The entire opening is a single camera tracking shot.

The fly on the wall lo-fi quality is what makes it for me, and the cameos.

Ah well, maybe I'll give it another go on DVD sometime. I was watching it on a pretty old video which I don't think helped it. I did find it hard to get over the real 80's look of it though. I do need to watch that opening sequence again as I think I was only half watching for the first few minutes and have since read that its a mostly ad libbed 8 minute tracking shot.

For a totally gripping, genuine early 80s film and look, I highly recommend the DVD of the TV series of John le Carré's book "Smiley's People". Watching all 6 episodes consecutively gives a tremendous sense of involvement and thrill, and the turn of 70s/80s look is even better to look at now than when it was contemporary :) Also, the plot is easier to follow without one-week gaps. Alec Guiness and all the supporting cast turned in really fine performances. Even the music was a clever blend of Russian dark romance blended with lonely Mahler snatches, perfectly illustrating the material of the book.

Silent Hill for me at the weekend. Real wanky horror film in the modern style. Some frights but generally ridiculous. Sean Bean continues to do himself no favours by being in it.
