I realise that this is slightly of topic and not really Hi-Fi / Audio related.

But has any body tried any of the noise cancelling headphones by Sony, Phillips or Sennheiser, (I know that there is also a Bose model but that is silly money).

I have a couple of long trips coming up later this year and aircraft noise really does my head in.

I have tried the bose model 2nd generation headphones. They work so well it is creepy. I put them on in my house whole room went silent but a slight hiss. Fantastic

    Hi Ken,

I have a pair of Sennheiser HDC 451s as I do a fair amount of long haul travel. They are fantastic at cutting out the aircraft drone. Actually allow you to hear the in-flight movies. For the price, I would definitely recommend them.

Could you use your own headphones for inflight movies as well as these noise cancellation thingy? Just thinking that the socket for piping out the movies in your seat are different to the mini jack for most domestic phones.

Don't go for noise cancelling phones.

Your best option are Etymotics ER4P's (or 6's which are cheaper, but I haven't tried.)

These are in ear phones and they offer significantly better noise isolation than can be acheived by noise cancelling headphones that sit on the outer ear...

I've worn the 4P's on 12 hour long flights.. I pop them in before take off and just leave them in.

Oh. and the ER4P's (and 4S's) are probably THE best headphone availble on the market today.. [I own a pair of Stax Lambda pro's and a pair of sennheiser 600's too..]

Not bothered at all what they sound like (I detest listening on headphones) I just want something to cancell the noise without having to 'stuff' things in my ears.

Don't get the Etymotics then.... you have to stuff them right down your earhole until they are practically plugged into your brain. Otherwise they sound crap (and even then the bass is so tight you might think there isn't any). And once they are in, don't move because any rubbing or vibration from the leads will go screeching straight into your head.

Just sit with your hands over your ears. It'll be fine.
