Nah, I'm one of these Squeezebox owning heathens that has nothing to "rack".

Your tale does remind me of some bargain hunter stories I was reading on the "Lansing Heritage" website in the States. There's canny buggers in California roaming around and finding old JBL studio monitors in rubbish skips or for $10 at garage sales. The sort of vintage stuff that fetches high $$$ on eBay.

actually no.. turntable does sit on top shelf.. it just takes up the whole width of the unit (just) and doesnt look all that brilliant.

i have two options.... use it for only cyrus kit and relegate the turntable to another shelf/platform/whatever

or attempt to find a decent hi-fi turntable thats smaller.... like a thorens or something

I know what you mean - it's quite depressing to read of things like Thorens TD124's and Nakamichi Dragon cassette decks from goodwill shops! There are plenty of bargains to be had over this side of the pond, however, if you know where to look. As examples, from my own experiences over the last few years -

Original 1960's Goodmans Maxims - £1 from car boot sale, then a second pair about a year later for £3 from the local dump.
Thorens TD160/Thorens arm/Shure cartridge - £1 from car boot sale.
Absolutely MINT AR38s speakers - £2 from car boot sale.
Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4000 in original box - £4 from car boot sale
Monitor Audio Silver 5i - £35 from car boot sale
Acoustic Energy AE120 - £20 from car boot sale (had to replace a woofer on these, though!)

And the one that astounded me the most -

Rega Planar 3/RB300/Coral 777MC - £5 from the DUMP!!

very good idea.. but the RPM5 is still about an inch and a half too big :(

max width on a shelf is 13 inches im afraid... i doubt a turntable can be had that small.

Nice find. How about just getting a top shelf to sit on the erm.... top shelf. If that makes sense. Large enough to take your tt, but with spikes or whatever underneath that fit on the rack.

nah... turntable wont be staying there... i dont like turntables on glass shelves for a start. also it looks daft on top of such a slender rack

i'll just get my modified ikea table put together and slap it on that :)

a guy I know (back in the 90's) found a pair of speakers that had been put out for the dustmen in Jesmond (afluent part of newcastle) - not sure of the brand but they were quite a size and sound fine when he set them up!
