    Hi,

I thought I would list some of the recent releases of old style soul. The items in this list were release over the last few years but show the old side of soul music. These releases major on singing style. If you like soul music from years gone by, here are some items that will send shivers down your spine &/or get your feet tapping.

This is only a small selection of a number of excellent releases.

    Howard Tate - Rediscovered.

Here is an album by a soul legend. He only recorded a few items in the 60s, to much acclaim then, disappeared off the face of the earth. He then had hit some hard times in the 70s. After much hunting down, he was found & taken into the studio.

The singing on this is top notch. Howard has a voice that can turn with deep drenched emotion. It sounds like it could have been recorded in the late 60s/ early 70s. Production is handled by Jerry Ragavoy, who wrote a number of soul classics. He penned tunes such as Time on my side (Rolling Stones, Irma Thomas) & Piece of the heart (Erma Franklin). He also wrote songs for this album.

    Candi Staton - Candis Staton

This is an album of stuff she recorded, pre 'Young hearts run free' era. It dates from 1969 to 1973. It is the stuff she did at The Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals. Here she shows why she is up there with the greats. Her voice is one of the best female soul voices going. Full of emotion that grabs you by the throat & refuses to let go.

Candi had a big hit with the disco/ soul classic 'Young hearts run free' (One of my alltime favourites) & Suspicious Minds. Both these tunes show the quality of the voice. She also appears on a dance record by the Source called 'You got the love'. This sampled her voice from a gospel record.

Solomon Burke - Don't give up on me.

This is the real deal. One of the early soul singers showing he has not lost his touch. He was one of the first singers to be known for soul singing. He is know as the king of Rock & Soul. Listen to this & you can see why. The power of soul comes out everytime he opens his mouth. The intimate sound of the album takes you on a journey of soul satisfaction. This was the Mojo album of the year a few years ago.

James Carr - You got my mind messed up.

Here is an artists that can rival Otis Redding. Some say beats him as well. Imtimate, intense feeling grabs your ears. He is another artist who was over shadowed by others. His original singles are collectable items & listening to this album you can hear why. He has that earthy quality that shouts soul. This is his debut album from 1966 but due to interest, was brought back to the fore by Kent records.

Various Artists - Talcum Soul 4.

This the fourth in the series of some very good 60s soul. Good to dance to as well as listen to. Features known & unknown artists (O'Jays, Irma Thomas, The Soul siters & Levi Jackson), with a lot of lesser known items. A lot of this stuff has featured on the Northern Soul scene & is worth checking out. Good for getting your dancing shoes on & getting on down to
