I'm referring to the oldest of the OMD compilations (I think there are 3); the one with the black cover. I've listened to this compilation for many years (my mum bought it in 1988) and it's still a winner IMO.

Chock full of classics, great production and an aural time machine, taking you back to decent 80's music .

Never really much mentioned about them on the forum. Are there any other OMD fans out there ?

OMD came from the area where I grew up, Andy McClusky went to the same school as me, though was a couple of years older so I barely knew him. The first OMD LP is still IMHO by far the best, its really got an energy and uniqueness to it. Superb die-cut cover too!

I pretty much gave up on them after Architecture & Morality, but the 1st LP and few singles are simply superb and still sound fresh – I wish I hadn't lost my Factory 7†copy of Electricity as it was by far the better version. The 10" cut of Messages is superb.

If you like the early OMD stuff the closely related Liverpool band Dalek I are well worth a look - their album 'Compass' on Back Door records is superb.

    Tony.

I suppose I had better own up too, although it is in my 'B' collection upstairs in a cardboard box!

Shame on you! How could you hide such a gem? I'm up to 'Joan Of Arc' now. Great track.

At the place where I work at the moment, OMD stands for the "Order Management Department"! :)

I'm the proud owner of a CD version of "The Best Of OMD" (the black cover version) too. :)

It's the only OMD album I own though of theirs. Must admit, I've never heard any of their actual albums. :shame:

My favourite OMD track is "Souvenir". It's one of those melancholic tracks that also gives you a warm glowing inside and makes you feel uplifted all at the same time, if that makes sense. Or maybe that's just me being strange! Got a copy of this track on a 10 inch vinyl single too. :MILD:

    Hi,

I too have this Album. It last saw action on my turntable last year. Very good stuff.

I also have a few of their albums.

They built up well from the first album through Organisation to Architecture & Morality. Went a bit shaky with Dazz ships ( poor sales). Get back on the hit trail with Junk Culture then went downhill fast after that.

My fave song is Souvenir. Like HenryT, I to have this on a 10" single.

I LOVE the first album - especially Dancing and Red Frame White Light.

Me and my mate Ed tried ringing (then) 051 6323003 and got a "number not recognised" - oh well. We also tried finding out about the Gramaphone Suite via directory enquiries, and gave up. This was in 1991.

I have the first 3 albums in a CD picture disc boxset, and Architecture and morality on very early CD (the label on the disc is well faded, and if you stick the disc under a colour CCTV you can actually see the individual tracks!).

I also have the weird combi of the first two albums on vinyl, and Dazzleships (another cool die-cut sleeve), Junk Culture, the one with Forever live and die on, and a signed copy of (I think) Secret, signed "Cheers, Andy McClusky" - well cool!

Of course I own the best of as well - I LOVE Joan of Arc (the b&w video with the birds flying etc was well cool) and I love all the FM modulation noise on the synth at the start of Telegraph - one of my favourite electronic tracks. Tesla girls rules as well - for its appearance in Weird Science (when they get slushy'd at the mall!).

Ahhhh Dom, I knew you wouldn't let me down :D.

Yup - well spotted as it's pretty much a background track at that scene.
A classic 'teen' film if ever there was one (apart from the other John Hughes' films of course : Breakfast Club, Ferris Beuller etc).

Who'd a thunk that Bob Downey Jr. would scale such lofty heights ?
I guess the copious amount of drugs helped :MILD: .

It's the old red telephone box outside the Railway Inn in Meols on the Wirral! I assume it's now 0151 632 3003 as the exchange changed a long while back. I used to go drinking there a fair bit in the 80s.

I *KNEW* you might know about this one, Tony :) So it really DID exist; I knew the song is (obviously!) about an old style red phone box, but was always curious about the number... I might ring it one day when bored and see if someone answers ;)

How far's that from West Kirby, out of curiosity?

Voodoo - I always seem to pick up on incidental music in films like that. In fact, it was that track that made me realise about them having to play films fast to match our 25hz refresh rate - they have to run the film 4% fast, hence music always sounds sped up. The worst offender is Beatles' Yellow submarine on DVD - why they didn't pitchshift that is beyond me!

Only a couple of miles – Hoylake (where I grew up) is between Meols and West Kirby, and they are all pretty small places. Hoylake and Meols both share the 632 exchange number.

Here is a pic of the Railway Inn, and the telephone box is / was about here.
