I'm taking a trip early October....so shall be poised with my camera....

At the moment I'm using sandisk 256md cards which are fine for normal jpg pics at normal resolution......but taking anything in RAW is a real pain. ie takes an age to write . Are there better cards out there which might help here. My Dads just bought my Mum a 2 gig card...that would give the space for RAW....

    Any (£) recommendations?

    TIA

    David

Maybe the problem is in the camera: it's slow to write(?)

Yep, it's the camera. It's a nice camera, just avoid using RAW unless it's a very important shot/shoot.

    Cheers,

Nice camera. My sister in law took some lovely pictures using the US version (named rebel XT - actually a 350D I think.....) a couple of weeks ago

    Mr Cat / anyone?

I've been thinking about an SLR for some time. I want to be able to take wide angle landscape shots and just better images generally.

Now that my Casio point and shoot has gone tits up and won't focus I've been having a bit of a look around.

Is that Cannon EOS 400D a good place to start? I'm no expert and know nearly nothing about photography; would I be better getting something cheaper to try first?

    Thanks

Great camera, the kit lens is a bit pants, one thing to remember that its not a full size sensor so you need to multiply the lens x 1.6 ie a 28mm lens in more like a 44 mm lens.

If you want real wide angle pictures an SLR is the best start.Remember the sensor on th 400d has around 50% less area than a 35mm film negative and so the effective focal length of the lens has a 1.6 multiplier. This effectively makes the normally supplied lens with 19-55mm a 30-88mm lens. This is no wider than an average point and shoot. So you will also need to buy an additional lens.

My advice is to look at canon or sigma 10-20mm lens
This opens out a whole new world in photography. Flickr is a great place to look at others efforts to inspire you.

    Recomendation

    Hi,

I recommend you pick up both the Canon 400D and the Nikon D40/D40X and see which on feels more confortable in your hand - performance wise, they are similar.

I also recomend you visit my amateur travel website for pointers:

    Happy shooting,

yeah, it's from canon themselves...comes with guarantee etc - I bought a g5 ages ago and that was spot on...

also, when you buy refurbished cameras (and most likely other items) - as a way of getting around paying custom tax they mark it as refurbished... ;)
don't think this is the case with the canon reseller tho - they;re based in the uk.
