Looking at buying 'something' ;) today, and sent the seller an e-mail requesting more info. Part of his return message read as such:

'this is a1 condition no box , it uses 110 volts as its from usa ,
but works fine just takes up to much room ;)'

    doesn't inspire confidence

And 'scuse me can someone tell me how it works 'just fine' if its 110v??? Surely it would need to have a voltage selector, or to have been converted, otherwise it won't work?? Tell me otherwise, 'cos i am no techie. I've asked him this, but no reply as yet. Is he trying to pull a penance on me :D

    Hi

He may have used it with a step down transformer. This will convert UK voltage to us voltage. Check with him about this & see if it is included in the deal. Or he may never have used it due to this voltage difference.

thanks. I was just curious how he 'knows' that it works fine if it is US. Either he has tried it in the US, or has used one of those step down transformers. Or he is fabricating its operation.

He's not getting back to me though. Also he said he would end auction early if i made him an offer, which i don't like the sound of.
Its bugging me though, 'cos i fancy what he is selling.

But basically it won't work on its own if it is 110v. Would you danage it if you tried to plug it straight into the mains, or would it just plain not work?

How much does a conversion cost? Can it be done with any hifi component? Who does this sort of thing?

Also, has anyone got a link for one of those Maplin voltage converters - i can't see for looking.

    cheers

Switch Mode power supply of sorts ?

My Tact pre works on either 110v or 230v without any switch changes/conversion etc.

If it's not drawing a huge current it may be the reason.
Power Amps etc. need to be rated correctly or as WM says "go bye bye" :micro:. I remember reading a review on audioreview.com where a guy in the US had bought and a rather expensive (Arcam I think) DAC which was encased in leather etc. and cas complaining becuase he plugged it in, had no sound and started to smoke :D :D :D . Needless to say somebody told him he'd just fried it - big stylee :JPS: .

So Cookie are you going to let the cat out of the bag and tell us what it is ;) ?

Sorry mate, i'm being a right pain in the arse now - i can't get them to work - we are talking about Maplins?

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/

Illustrates why i would be crap at DIY - i can't even find the parts, let alone know what to do with them.
