On hols recently in Thailand I went on an elephant trek where my beastie started rumbling at another elephant. It wasn't loud at all but the bass was incredible - I could feel it wobbling through my internal organs... Clearly the elephant 'enclosure' has evolved along some sound acoustic principles - maybe speaker designers should experiment with thick wrinkly skins and large belliied cabinets...

Sounds like a typical speaker designer to me....

it was the same when I went to the zoo at hanover (way back in '97) - they were feeding the big cats and that was done in an enclosure...they were feeding a lion with some rabbit carcasses and i managed to get close enough and make eye contact...it looked back at me and gave an almighty roar - I nearly shat myself even tho it was in a big cage that was behind some railings...but the sound was most impressive!
