that' folks, is the sound of yours truly walking smack into the 21st century and i just know its gonna hurt

new PC (first ever except the old ZX Spectrum) delivered last week
new digital SLR and suppring kit (c/w visa bill  ) just delivered to my desk
broadband should be intalled before the weeks out

and i have next to no idea how any of it works......

not surprising given my home village is a former Luddite stronghold, a tradition i appear to have maintained until now with little effort

a see a learning curve appraoching, and a steep one at that........
wish me luck (or proffer advice!!)

By some computer books and do some reading. I found that at just £14.99 The 'complete' series of books are quite good as they draw experience from other authors, ( eg: Windows Professional XP - Complete ) including official Microsoft publications (IIRC), available from most good book shops . The Complete Idiots guide and MS Blah Blah for Dummies are not too bad either.

The Help pages actually within Windows XP and Online ( which i assume you will have) are very good also, however not so good if you've done something sillly an can't get the wreched thing to actually start up in the first place, so you can read them.

The SAMS 24 Hours books are excellent as well as the O'Reilly 'in a nutshell' series.

The fog is clearing in my crystal ball, I see, I see... a thread de-railed and turning into a PC v. mac argument that profits no one...

Fair point, but if you have never used a PC before a mac is easier.

I'm not too sure, Windows XP couldn't really be any easier. Chris is you can make a thread on this forum you will have no problems picking it up. Windows XP makes it all very easy. Just don't expect to be able to use Photoshop just yet :)

imac / immac - i thought thtey were those big, wide angle cinema thingies?....... ;)

cheers for the comments guys, subject to satisfactory completetion of diy chores  i'll be getting stuck into things this weekend - sad i know but i have to get stuff done or the carpet fitter cant finish off, therefore SWMBO will likley finish me off...... :SWMBO:

Fired the d70 up last night - all seems to be operating well, just have to plough theough the 10mm thick instruction book now.....if only to find out how to turn off the sodding 'in focus' beep...

i'm sure things were much easier when i simply put film into the F80.......

Ahhh, but where is your degree in luddite FROM? Presumably one from David Beckham memorial ex-poly is much more significant than one from cambridge? Did you end up in a lot of debt to get it?
