Is that really so? I imagined there would be special quiet bearings, cunningly shaped fan-blades, maybe even a flatter rather than peaky (whining) noise ditribution, etc. I ask because I was thinking of investigating after-market computer fans as a source for a less annoying fan for my subwoofer.

I am using an Antec truepowwer 480 and it is really very quiet. It has dedicated power leads for 3 fans that are temp controlled, it runs them at minimum speed and only increases if things hot up, mine have never speeded up ( i did once use a hairdryer in there just to make sure they worked as advertised- they did ).
I got a lot of advice off the MSI forum when i first built my PC. I found that a lot of these huys are obsessed with temperatures. MSI included some kind of monitoring software a for temps and i found that i was looking at it all the time, for no real reason. I've since binned this software and life is so much simpler. I set a reasonable Temp level alrm in my BIOS ( 60 deg i think ) and will deal with any temp issues if it ever goes off, it never has so far ) .
I'm running an AMD XP2500 barton at stock speeds and voltages with an AMD HS+Fan + 1 gb of ram.

Ps with this AntecPS the PC is also really quiet, I have 7 fans whirring away and can hardly hear it al all.

Ya building that pc was eaiser than I thought, started up first time with no real problems, it all went together rather nicely, good to see a nice heatshink securing mechinsum for a change, I was getting a little tired of the 2 screwdriver approach. Yep the things that took the time was the fiddly and rather annoying front case, switches, leds and ports and then trying to get windows XP to "see" the SATA drive when trying a repair install, can they not supply a floppy for the drivers, as the XP install will only read drivers from a floppy, so supplying drivers on a CD doesn't really help does it!?

As for your teething problems Dom, ya well I got a bit tired at around 3am so I'll have to come back for another go and gets these little things sorted, the power button I am sure is a BIOS thing, sure I can sort that one out. As for the long load up time, I think this is a network issue but will have a look around the net and see what I can find. Your Ad-aware test though, prity scary dude, how many porn sites you been to then!! ? ? ? ehum.

I must admit that spooked me out when I saw the CPU fan switch itself off, and even then the temps where 44c, I think that is what the "smart cpu fan control" option in the bios is for, but as I don't trust it, I've turned that off, cpu fan only running at 2k anyway hardly any noise at all which is very impressive from a Stock cooler.

Yes Dom's system is certainly quiet, only the movement of the fans and the lights indicated it was turned on! Its great the PC industry is taking pc noise so seriouly, pitty it doesn't happen in the workplace, as you have to shout over the noise our work pc's make.

Ya Dom if you have a spare entire weekend free you can reinstall XP, but its a right royal PITA, just remember to back everyting up, make sure you have all your product cd's, serials and keys and a coffee machine real close! Personally I can think of better ways of spending my weekends!

Ya Paul I have a XP2600+ and I think your temps are a little high for idle but then mine has a cool master volcano thingy sat on it, but if you use motherboard Monitor I notice on my board (Asus something) that there are 2 cpu temps, 1 is core and 2 is general ( I think), my core ranges from 60-65 and the general 50-56 both temps taken when cpu is under load.

It is true yes, because apart from having a better design and fluid bearing motors, they also achieve their silence by spinning at a lower speed, thus circulating less air. There used to be a fan called a tornado, which circulated lots of air, but also made lots of racket!

I dont think they are. Firstly the motherboard I have has a notoriously unreliable temperature sensor, and its known to run as high as 20-30 celcius over what it really is. In a bench test of various coolers, my motherboard was used and they basically said to only treat the result as an indication, and some were getting over 100 celcius, they would surely fail if it was.

Secondly, the fan is a quiet fan, and the heatsink is a huge Thermalright SLK800 so I'm not going to get amazing results, but it does it in silence.

Errr, you forgot to mention the RIGHT ROYAL PITA of a case intake fan and the SATA connections - glad we managed to jury rig a solution there anyway! That floppies/drive thing was even worse - nice USB FDD that was about as useful as a chocolate teapot as far as XP's concerned :)

Oh - and it was MY fault we had so many hassles with the SATA - forgot the extra manual in the box for that controller - oops!

Will prod about in the BIOS tonight - there's probably a conflict or something random. Will also try not to break it - unlike that PC you helped me put together for mum - tee hee!

Not to be out done by Dom in the case style stakes I decided to make a few modifications to mine.

Ok so I can't drive a vauxhall nova around Tesco's car park pulling doghnuts and blasting out drum & Bass (or what ever), so here's the next best thing!

    He he he he :)

There are supposed to be lights either side, but if I turn on the 2nd set it restart the computer, think the PSU doesn't like it! hehe :)

Sorry just HAD to be done.

But the fan and temp control & readout thingy is really cool though.

    Bling bling :)

I love those cheesy stickers on my case though - they'll look so, like, 5 minutes ago, soon :)

You should mount in another PSU and have LOADS of lights in there!

Is that temp thing only compatible with your mobo? Wandering what I can get to soup up my board (I guess one of those USB convertor leads for the front sockets is a goer though :)

Bling indeed! thought I'm sure the "pro modders" go further, but the lights only cost £1 so it just had to be done.

The temp and fan control panel came from Ebuyer, its a Super flower Fan control bay things, very nice, comes with a choice of front panels and the lcd back light colour is changable to, how cool is that!?

thanks for thehelp guys, instlled ne CM 6 heatpipe cooler and idle temp dropped 15 degrees, just proior to installing cooler temp was fluctuating wildly, one second MBM showed 65 deg then jumped to &( then 89 then back to 69, something amiss methinks, installed new HS and started up comp, lasted about 20 min then died, now waiting on new proc and MB not sure which one is Fked, maybe thats why my temps were so high.

Hear is a pic before upgrade

Wow analoguekid what is a "bright" pc, you must have a powerful PSU to keep that lot lit up!?

So the P4 bit the dust in the end? What a nightmare hope the company you got it from are not giving you any hassle.

I like the LCD panel in the front, is this one of those programmable things, I've not seen them on them around, wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of them.

No point cutting windows in the side of my PC's as they stand next to each other and you'd never see the sides. Could put come coloured fans in the front I guess, would like kind of cool.

No offence, but I much prefer a minamilstic looking Lian Li to one covered in bolt ons - much less ugly IMHO ;)

Blackpool indeed!!! Cool though - what's the thing with the 4 blue LEDs???

This is what my case looks like (well, one with no computer in it):

One of those temp readouts would be cool, but get this - I'm SERIOSLY considering putting my 5.25 floppy (from my first, 1992, PC) in it - for retro chic!

No Dom No, you can't put the 5.25 drive in it, what you want is one of the flower fan controls, that would look really neat.

Hum I would really like one of those LCD screens then every drive bay would be filled! hehe :)

550w PSU, ya that's probably the way to go.

Please daddy - PLEASE. I'll paint it black :)

Seriously - it'd be worth a laugh! I have the PSU and leads after all...

I do want one of those Superflower thingies though, and a USB card reading slot bay would rule as well...
