Have you any experience of the 5881 tube? I believe that this is a drop-in replacement for the EL34, Im thinking of getting a set to try out.

Also whats the general opinion on nos GE input valves, theres a pair of ECF82's on ebay I might bid on if they're any good.

    Cheers

    T-bone,

This site is usually very good for cross referencing valve equivalents.

for me, i wouldnt buy valves from anywhere but a source that tests and measures them before they go out. Definately not on e-bay!.

check out watford valves for a good place.

sorry, havent tried any general electric valves.

Langrex are good too, they'll match, have all sorts in (including loads of mil spec variations etc.) and they're cheap. Quick dispatch too. No website though, have to do it over the phone.

Langrex are one of my favourites :)

I like watford for its website which is really really handy.

wilson valves have been good too.

CVC are good for their own brand valves (tested etc) but less good for NOS stuff.

    spoilt for choice!

a few of the german valve suppliers are quite cheap, but dont know if they test.

Not all 5881 are not drop in's for EL34. Some have a lower max voltage rating than an EL34. New Sovtek ones should be fine. You also could try a 6L6GC or 6L6WGC which can take the voltage.

The best replacement for EL34 are KT77 but they are rare and cost an arm and a leg.
