i know what you mean but do you really have confidence that all future governments won;t misuse the information at their disposal?

Future governments? How about all governments past, present, future, everywhere, forever. They all misuse information on a daily basis as far as I'm concerned. Lies, lies, lies, cover ups, secrets, and then more lies.
Doesn't the Government already sell information that the census gathers? The census info that you're legally obliged to provide. Why would you expect them to act differently for any other info that comes their way?

I expect very little from Governments as far as standards of behaviour is concerned, as that's the way it's always been (and maybe, just maybe, that's the way it has to be......)

I'll get the new ID card jobby when I have to and try not to worry, I'll stick my head firmly in the sand and hum a little tune.:D

i was trying to be 'level headed' the most obvious situation is that the current 'terrorist' situation(s) continue and escalate and as a consequence an extremeist rightwing govornment is voted in on a wave of anti-immigration. i'm sure all those with id cards proclaiming their ethnic origin to their great grandparents will feel really safe basking in the warm glow of rfid scanners.
if i can 'buy' 10 years worth of time for id cards to go the way of the dodo by changing my passport in may, then great.
    cheers
