I recently made payment to an American company via Paypal, so I don't see why it couldn't be used by an American to pay you.

    Rob,

Just a thought, but have you been paid by PayPal by anyone before?

The reason I ask is that I remember I had to tweak my PayPal account before it became a proper payable one! Once setup it should be usable from anywhere.

    EDIT...
Although, I tried to pay a well established UK company using PayPal last week and it got 'flicked' (much to their surprise) so it may have been a temporary PayPal problem.

i don't think that they can't paypal you.

but as international paypal account you probably have a credit card paypal account only, right?

in this case they can xfer money to your paypal but you can;t withdrow it.
what you can is to have it on your paypal ballance and use it for you future paypal payments.

paypal is no less safe than credit card.

in any case you always can ask you credit company to cancel the payment - paypal will go crazy becuase you didn;t do it through them but at leats you will keep your money.

Sounds like a way for Paypal to have the benefit of your money - and earn interest on it.

Just want to put my 10p worth in here:

Only ever accept money from a VERIFIED Paypal user with a CONFIRMED address. Also check on the transaction details page that the transaction is elibible for Paypal's seller protection policy. I've recently been defrauded out of £250 on a mobile phone sale and Paypal's attitude seems to be 'tough'!

    eisenach,
i once purchased a Naim hicap off of ebay with Paypal. i accidently hit the "Buy Now" icon 3 times, thinking that the computer/mouse wasn't working properly. this happened at 3 am. by 9am, i received a phone call from someone at Paypal enquiring about potential account fraud. i explained what happened and they immediately took care of the situation, charging my credit card $600 instead of $1800. i was impressed. this has been my only experience using Paypal and i will use it again.

Could you expand on that? I'd assumed that once you'd received the payment the money was yours and that was that?

Sadly not. Read the Paypal small print very carefully!

Martin, alas like you, I assumed that once Paypal send the email to say the money has been paid, it is yours.

I 'sold' a mobile phone on ebay last Monday lunchtime and received the email from Paypal to say that the buyer had paid. As agreed with the buyer, I posted the phone Special Delivery for delivery the next morning. On checking my email on Tuesday morning there was one from Paypal saying:

"It has come to our attention that you may be the recipient of potentially
unauthorized funds. We have initiated an investigation into this event. In
the meantime, we have placed a temporary hold on the funds in question
    until the investigation is complete."

Suffice it to say, the buyer was a con artist who appears to have used a stolen credit card. I phoned Paypal and they basically said that the transaction was not ineligible for their Seller Protection Scheme as the buyer was unverified and had an unconfirmed address. They said that the money paid for the phone would go back to the credit card company as it was rightfully their's.

Unfortunately, I received the email after the phone had been delivered. I don't want to slag off Paypal before their investigation is complete, but it is looking like I'm going to use the £250.

The matter is now in the hands of my local Police but I must admit to not being too hopeful.

As I said before - only send stuff to VERIFIED buyers with CONFIRMED addresses.

Garyi, the 'Help' part of the Paypal site says:

How do I confirm my address?

To confirm your address, you will first need to add a credit card to your PayPal account. If your credit card company supports the Address Verification System, PayPal will check that the address you provided for your account matches the billing address that your credit card company has on file. You may be required to complete the Expanded Use Enrolment process, in which your credit card will become activated. Your address will not be Confirmed until the Expanded Use Enrolment process has been successfully completed.

    Hope this helps!

    Garyi,

If your feedback rating is good, I'm sure most sellers will give you the benefit of the doubt. It is really only 'new' users who need watching carefully.
