My work PC has one of those bloody internet viruses and I have been advised that it is easiest to just wipe it and reload everything.

My question is how do I do this? Or is there an alternative. BTW, it shuts down if I try to use the built in CDRW.

Thanks for any help

which virus - if you go to the norton site they will often have a specific cure for a virus, trojan or worm. otherwise get yourself a good anti-virus and firewall your machine may already be some 13 year old ukranians' zombie biatch - launching dos attacks on george bush.
cheers

Julian,

I tried to load Norton but it has a mirror programe that prevents it working and shuts down the PC :(

It's not a worm, most of the files seem uncorrupted, but I cannot install any anti virus software, nor use the CD drive at all.

So is Norton the only anti-virus software now?

Download AVG Free Edition from www.grisoft.com

And download a firewall - I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall Free Ediiton from Sygate.

A little note about keeping your PC safe from nasty things Autumn software innoculations, worth a read and not too technical.

I use GriSoft AVG, LavaSoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy plus Zonealarm Firewall all free and all topped off with XP SP2 - they seem to work for me.

Thanks a lot to all , especially Andrew. Managed to download onto the Mac then copy to CD and hopefully have cleared the wretched thing.

Now before I start using it again, I guess I'll have to invest heavily in firewalls and ongoing protection :( Chris, what's wrong with Norton ?

Merlin,

A lot of the utilities such as a firewall can be obtained free (eg sygate) , so it neednt cost much to protect your PC.

Merlin.

I use pretty much the same program's as auric lists. And note "all free". :)

I'm with Auric and Technobear.
What's wrong with Norton -nothing if you don't mind paying for what is available free via AVG!
