As a big Peter Gabriel fan, I was wondering if anyone else has found his recordings since US to have a characteristic sound that is very bass heavy and "flat" sounding? I have not found it with any other artisits and am wondering what is going on.

I have played US on many different systems and always found it to have a lifeless, "thuddy" type of sound. Shame because it has one of my all time fave songs - "Digging in the Dirt". Apparrently, Tony Levin plays low "E' and below(!) on that song but that's not necessarily the reason for it having that type of sound.

Tony Levin plays down to a low C on his 5 string at least on the DVD version of DIggin in the Dirt. Is US after Up?

Gabriel has always favoured a very low slung bottom end to his recordings. If you go to his official website, he talks about his recordings and favoured production sound there. He is a bit of a bass freak.
