Unfortuantely, this type of mail is now very common indeed.

I would stongly advise all PC users to use a SPAM killer app and also a privacy app. and keep the definitions up to date (along, of course, with effective anti virus and firewall).

The key is never to respond to such mails. Banks etc will never ask for you to log in, provide details, etc directly from an e-mail.

Seems fairly obvious to me, but there must be a whole truck load of naive innocents out there ~ take a look at the number of hijacked ebay accounts, for example.

Count yourself lucky, I get about 5 of those every day (mostly Barclays bank). Don't be tempted to follow the link to leave abusive messages as you may download something nasty!

I fully endorse the advice given.

NEVER REPLY TO THE EMAIL AND NEVER CLICK ON ANY LINKS THAT THEY CONTAIN.

I would also advise you to forward the email to the bank concerned. Most banks have security departments who should investigate this type of attempted fraud. The more emails that they receive, the more likely they are to try to do something about it.

McAfee internet security suite, for example. Norton have a similar product, but I prefer the McAfee. I picked up the latest McAfeee from PC world for less than £25. Suite also includes firewall and anti-virus. Inexpensive, easy to use and configure. The privacy app. also has a nice little file shredder.

Just seen another current scam posted on another forum.

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel
Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and
that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number).
DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.
If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will
already have been billed £15 for the phone call.

Nasty, thanks for the warning. Nice to see some more inventive scams coming through though, I was getting bored of the usual stuff via my email; ebay/paypal/bank/building society/dead persons will.....etc... . Having the scam hand delivered is a welcome change with a real personal touch  .

    Mr Cat,
Wachovia does indeed exist and caters for a large number of Snow Birds who although living in the cold north of the US travel down to the warm south of the country to vacation throughout the winter months but as this may not apply to you then you are correct in assuming this is nothing more than an invivation to join phishing trip:(

PS has anyone tried visiting one of these phishing sites while using Firefox 2 just to see if the anti-phishing code works?

I get these all the time.

I just got the new Firefox browser (V2.0) which among other nice security features lets you know if a site you are on is on a current up to date list of phishing sites.

Wachovia does indeed exist and is linked with HSBC. UK based Wachovia accounts use HSBC sort codes.

I manage to collect no more than 3 at the most crap email a month and that is on 14 accounts. I find the Gmail filters work rather well at assiging fishing and spam attempts to the spam box without a second thought and although I look every now an then for incorrect assignments over the last two years I have found no more than a handful that have been wrongly assigned by the Gmail filters. I read my Gmail via Mozilla Thunderbird and as such see very little or no attempts at phishing or indeed spam. In conjunction with Firefox 2 I use the NoScript add-in that protects me from rouge javascrips and other bits that try to run without express permission, so all in all as far as I'm concerned it is the closed season for phishing and I'm more than happy with that.

Even if you think an email from paypal or ebay or whatever might actually be legit then the simple way to protect yourself is to make your own way to that website. Never use a link in an email.
