What did you think of them - and compared with what other units?

I think you know what I meant Markus - can you expound further? If so then feel free to do so.

It's too boring, this must be 634th time you're asking about phono stages.

For the record, I heard the Vendetta Research as part of a complete (and rather nice) system, so I can't say anything specific about its sound other than that it clearly must be a good'un.

Why don't you go buy a decent one and be done with it. If you want to play it safe, you can buy the Brinkmann stage. If you feel adventurous, you could order the LCR Cole from diyhifisupply and give the rest of us a bit of info.

Already tried the brinkmann. I might be borrowing a cole (or its super charged cousin) soon enough.

What exactly are you looking for that the units you have already tried don't deliver? (Please don't say "slam" or "air" or anything like that...)

Well whichever one I have tried has always sounded flawed in some way (and always a completely different way). If I could combine the best parts of each phono it would be perfect.

    The fein lacked detail
the groove and wna both added distinctive character (all opamp designs sound this way to me so far)
the borbely is a bit vague in the bass

    All in all very frustrating.

Not wishing to be provocative, but it sounds to me as if you're not entirely sure what you're after. Probably the only way you're going to decide on something is to just keep trying different alternatives, I doubt anyone else's input is going to help much.

If I could combine the best parts of several amps and speakers I've heard in my system, that would be perfect, too.

I agree with Ian that you may well be chasing after something that doesn't exist. Buy a few things used, try them for a month or two and see if you can live with them. Or borrow some things from other forum members, if possible. Ultimately, you'll have to live with a compromise.

Agreed - however I havent quite found the compromise I am looking for yet. Whereas I have with all the other components (for now ;) ).
