Why oh why do they do it? By this. I mean take a popular track from the 80s, add some form of dance-type beat to it and plenty of crappy sounding synths.

It just absoultely screams 'pikey' and always reminds me of the Kevin/Sharon types. They are most likey to own a tweaked up Vauxhall Nova with about 50 12" subs. flashing lights etc. and/or a crappy Alba/Bush/JVC/Sony (yes some of their stuff is naff!) system with plenty of flashing lights and a large overrated RMS rating with crap sound!

    Examples include:

+ 'Heaven' by DJ Sammy (Orginally Bryan Adams) - the accoustic version is actually quite pleasent!

+ Boys of Summer by DJ Sammy (Orignally Don Henley) - they have absolutely masacred this track - the original was a classic and still is toda.

+ Take My Breath Away (Originally Berlin) - I had the misfortune to hear this in Index today. The original wasn't my favourite, but this version is utter shite!

The only 'remix' type track that I do quite like is the one Roger Sanchez did, which included samples from 'I won't hold you back' by Toto.

But then again, I suppose to the pikeys, 'it's got plenty of phat bass to show off to ma mates, innit!' :D

happy hardcore - it's for shiny luvved up people ripped off their tits on their chemical of choice. it's not really for listening to. unless it's 4am and the only thing keeping you from settling down for a nice kip on that comfy looking keyboard is the remains of the coffee causing through your veins, some really dodgy biker speed that's made you talk bollocks for the past hour and happy hardcore at 130 db's being pumped out of a rather ingenious 20 way system built from every computer speaker and sub in the office.
    or so i've heard....
cheers or should that be cheese.

    dj sammy isn't happy hardcore.

happy hardcore is at least 160bpm-180bpm

happy hardcore artists include billy bunter, force, styles, etc.

sammy is just popular chart house at hard house/hard trance speeds(135-145bpm).

As for the pikey comment. Are you saying that electronic dance music is pikey music?

no, but taking an old tune, whacking some beats under it, plonking some rave piano over the top and speeding up the vocals is classic hh stuff.
dj sammy is wannabe stuff toned down a bit so sub teenagers don;t overheat at the school disco.
    cheers

Sometimes it works for me. I kind of liked what Ferry Corsten did with William Orbits take on Barbors adaggio for strings. OK I admit it was classical piece ruined but what came out of it was still thouroughly enjoyable. Horses for courses I guess.

I really don't mind the remixes. Sometimes, if you consider the remix as a completely different piece of music and put the original to the back of your mind, it can work very well. Of course sometimes it quite plainly doesn't.

I didn't really know what the term "pikey" meant allthough I had a good idea. I found the definition here:

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pikey :D

My initial guess of, English version of the US term "trailer trash" looks like it was pretty spot on :)

Well when a person drives a Vauxhall Corsa which cost him £2,000 who then spent a further £10K having it painted perlescent mint green, adding custom made light units, custom body panels, blue flourescent lights under the chassis, quad exhaust pipes, a bored out 2.3 litre, gas flow head with twin turbos and a 2 Kilowatt system, you need some tasteless shit to play while you cruise the sea front at weston super mare in your burberry basball cap whilst you rap along in your sarf london/text speak/patois/even though you grew up in Portishead verbage.

    "yer get mi?"

Hmmm. I always thought "Pikey" was a derogatory name for Travellers (you know like that character Brad Pitt played in the film "Snatch").

The people you are describing are definitely Chavs (Charvs, Neds, Scallies - regional variations apply) - they of the Burberry baseball cap anyways.

Absolutely. Pikey is a southern term for Tinkers, Didicoy, etc. ie. non-Gypsy caravan dwelling travellers. Its not really Pikey music at all.

Whereas Chav, Townies, f*ckwits... Call them Peasants - its an English tradition afterall.

Michael, I think the same applies to most countries to one extent or another, though Grrrrrreat Britain is particularly smitten with people who pride themselves on being free of all morals, any sense of community, or civic responsibility, taste, decency or intelligence. People who aspire to live the dream of "I dont gve a f*ck" in every area of their life.

In my mind, this definition spans the traditional notions of class or financial worth.

Greg, I couldn't agree more about your comment re: the modded Corsa :D

Just before I went into HMV, I noticed the usual chav mother with two kids in tow. To top it off, they had the classic chavvy names 'Wayne' and 'Kayleigh'. Of course, the next thing I hear is a round of 'Wayne! Kayleigh! Get your farrrrkkkkinggg arses over 'ere naaawwww! Classic :D
