    I thought the English Football team was Britain's greatest hoax (1966 excepted, and who knows - maybe it was all staged at Elstree studios). :D :D :D

    Acceptance of Piltdown man was far from overwhelming, even at the time. A substantial slice of scientific opinion seriously doubted it, but they were drowned out by the popular acclaim of the time. Piltdown was never totally accepted right through until the advent of the fluorine test that proved it a hoax.

    In a way, it's a bit like hi-fi. If people are really determined to believe something, they will ignore or find a way to minimise any rational objection.

    I forgot that some of the forum members are old enough to remember the Piltdown man thing first hand, as well as being part of the missing link between ape-man ;)
