I've been getting the odd DNS database error white page, usually sorted by a refresh. I just assumed it was my sh!te ISP (Tiscali) causing the problems.....

It was a bit flakey yesterday and got worse today. Usually gets again better after a day or two.

My guess is that the MySQL connections limit is set too low - I've sent a request to the hosting company to raise the limit / fix whatever is broken. I've recently moved pfm onto a higher bandwidth hosting plan as the site's growth in usage is huge at the moment, but I am well within the limits of that so it should be ok.

Yup - the recent growth seems to be more than the server can stand. I'm looking into the options / costs of coping with the additional usage. Basically pfm is still there, it just can't cope with the demand....

It's really winding me up - the hosting company appear to have reduced MySQL to just 70 active connections, the default value is 100, pfm typically has 100-160 users online at any given time. I'm trying to get the company to increase this value as it will fix the problem. I'm nowhere near the monthly bandwidth limit - pfm shifts about 30Gb of data a month and has around 5.5 million hits. I’m paying for a 100Gb package…

Hopefully things should be a little better now - max connections are now set back to their default and it appears that there was another site on the server that was somehow abusing / overrunning the MySQL facility, they have apparently now been warned and threatened with removal.

That explains the recent non-connection issues then.

It's been down for over an hour, no mention of maintenance that I noticed.
