Pioneer 565A at £250 and the newer model 575A at £150 has won many awards. Huge R&D budgets and production volumes of DVD players compared to CDPs has lead to quality going up and prices dropping like a stone.

Other universal players worth considering are:
    Pioneer DV 656AK £200
    Pioneer DV 668 £450
    Pioneer DV 757 Ai £500
    Pioneer DV868 Ai £760
    Denon DVD 2900 £600

When used as a transport with a DAC, these universal players should match the quality of CDPs.

    Hi,

Sideshow Bob has one of these. I hope to dabble with one very soon.

It sounds just fine with CD, like virtually any CD player does nowadays. Good picture too. I only have one SACD and prefer the CD layer to the SACD, but I can't generalise from the experience of one SACD. The DVD-A sounds pretty good. If you're in the market for a DVD player with universal playback and aren't interested in impressive casework it's a bargain.

I bought a 575a last week as my old DVD player has gone to the missus.

It does a great job on DVD, much better than my old Pioneer 535 unit. Possibly helped by supporting progressive scan over component, which looks brill via my projector.

Following comments I'd read, I tried it as a CD player over the weekend, comparing it to my CD5i.
Lets summarise by saying that the "claims" about how good it is are being a little optimistic.
On CD it sounded like every other cheap CDP, i.e. congested, no life, no interest, lacking in detail etc etc.
I did try it on SACD (DSOTM), and for spacial separation and placing of instruments, it's actually better than the CD5i. However, in every other way, it still gets stuffed completely.
I really don't think it gets even slightly close to my CD5i.

Yes, 575A is no match for a dedicated CD spinner.
From what I have heard, not even higher priced Denon and Pioneer Universals are as good a mid-range CDP.

Have you tried it as a transport for a DAC?

I've got the pioneer 868, stonking picture but the cd side is slaughtered by my modified Arcam A5. I would put its performance at slightly above my pioneer pds801cd player which is about 11 years old. I haven't tried it on sacd or dvda because i'm too mean to buy extra interconnects and I've only got one sacd disc.

Me too - although I STILL haven't got an SACD or DVD-A, and I've had the player since August 2003!!! I don't need DSOTM *again* and there's not a lot else on either format I'd shell out for.

Orbital's "The Altogether" on DVD, even through my ancient Yamaha E800 and cheap(ish) Paradigm centre (with Rega mains/rears) kicks arse mind you - who needs SACD/DVD-A when you can have groovy wraparound sound and visuals!?

yeah, I've only got a handful of DVD-a and SACDs....I can't tell any real difference between them and music dvds (apart from the selection you can actually buy!).

I've only got some basic interconncts too - but they still cost me 50 quid

Over the the USA, the Denon appears to be the player of choice for the mod brigade. Infact there are a handful of companies who's work is being recognised as true state of the art. APL, Exemplar & Modright seem to be the biggest hitters at the moment. I think it goes without saying, that the modded route seems to give you the biggest bang for your buck.
