Its a PL-71 with a crappy arm as fitted to the PL-12D.

Usefull as motor / plinth / lid etc spares for a PL-71 but apart from that not much cop.

Quite often on US ebay but very rarely anywhere else. A good one $300 - $400. Iffy or need repair jobs a lot cheaper, but there is a lot of expert help around on the web for repairs.

    Re pioneer pl51 (questions)

Well ive just bought the pl 51 looks as new out the box im told, ive paid £90.00
for it, if it is as new i could use the top cover for my pl 71 when i get one and
maybe some other bits, i nearly went into credit for the wt amadaus, but just
cant justify the mark up on it, so after reading loads of posts ive opted to find
and buy the pl71 thanks for your help

Put something like a Grado in it and it will serve you in the meantime.

Sorry you lost me about the mono thing. Sumiko / Denon 103 would be great with the PL-71 arm but not so good on the PL-51 arm.

The original ones were when they designed it.

But since then someone invented stereo and they modified the design to cater for it in 1958 :D

    Re pioneer pl 51 (questions)

would the rega 200 arm fit onto the pl 51, ive a lathe at home so i could

make weights adjustments etc, would this be an improvment on the original.

PM speedysteve about fitting as he has both PL-71 arm and Rega R200, they have much in common.

And yes that arm will be infinitely superior to the PL-51 arm, which really is not much cop.

I had the pleasure of seeing the modified Pioneer arm at Steve's yesterday.
Looks 1st rate and sounds excellent.

Not many Pioneer arms around but the Rega models were sold in the uk by the truckload so its great to see that these can be transformed in this way.

to the base remove tonarm weight and pack outside the

Excellent, get chatting with Richard as he's had these thing in pieces and can best advise.

Not quite sure what you mean by 'shrink wrap the platter to the base' though.
Probably best to remove the platter and wrap it before placing it somewhere snug within the box. Assuming the platter lifts off - it does on the DDs I've used.

A light tap with a hammer on the spindle as you pull up the platter with the other hand will release it.

The PL-71 arm is good enough to track anything. It is medium mass so for things like Shure V15 use light weight SME type headshell, and for older carts like DL103 use a heavy Sumiko headshell. You can also order heavier counterweight in brass from speedy.steve.

I use the turntable for both MM and MC for test, development and dem purposes. For MM I use Decca London Super Gold (but mine has lost a channel at the moment so I am using my Shure M3D, also a very musical, if odd, cart) and for MC I use Ortofon SPU Gold.

Don't use a step down transformer, I have tried them, and even convinced myself a 50va was better than changing the internal taps, but it induces hum in the Decca so I changed voltage on the tag strip. There are two versions, one has a plug you rotate to change voltage, the other you have to rewire the tag strip.
