Please please me by The Beatles. That was a great album. Listening on my stereo it seems that a lot of life and enthusiasm was captured on it - even though the songs were not the greatest. And the stereo is a bit wrong ! why was that ? I have to sit sideways to get the right perspective on it?

Because it was recorded in mono, then mixed into pseudo stereo?

SG [maybe labelled Les Paul Custom if it's a 61?]

    Correct on 1) & 2)

    1) not proper stereo, I think because they only had a 2 track recorder in the studio and there was little intention to make a stereo record initially. Stereo grams were too expensive for most people and AM radio was where the records would be played in glorious mono. Is my theory correct ?
Thus the left channel would serve better as a background and the right as the fore ground and hence my attempts to turn sideways to make sense of it. The other way would be to press the mono button on my amp - if I had one.

    2) SG Custom copy by Tokai

AFAIK the early Beatles albums were recorded in both mono and stereo. The US got the stereo releases [which are good] and the Uk got mono, then bodge stereo [as you said, the bodge version will play correctly on mono decks]. I think all 3 versions are on CD - perhaps deleted tho. You need an expert to tell you which versions to get.

I was always under the impression that the stereo versions sounded the way they did was just because in those days for engineers of pop records, stereo was a new thing and they didn't really understand how to make it work properly, hence all the vocals in one channel and instruments in the other.

Kenny Everett used to do a Beatles sing along section on his Saturday morning Capital show, where he just swang the balance over to one side and cut out the vocals.

    jonboselector,

Please could you not attach a different image (or even the same image) to every post you make. It not only uses up forum bandwidth but also occupies precious space on the forum database which is rapidly approaching it's 100Mb limit (something that means I'm alreadin the process of moving the hosting for the forum).

If you must have an image at the bottom of each post please host it/them somewhere else and link to it/them.

    Cheers,
    Michael.
