My question. Who "played" mandolin on Rod Stewart's TOTP performance of "Maggie Mae"?

    Hi

John Peel 'played' the mandolin on ToTP. He really mimed as he can't play the instrument. Ray Jackson was the bloke who played the mandolin on the record.

Also the late Kirsty McColl brought the song New England to a wider audience when her version hit the top 10 in the 80s.

    Hi,

Which star teamed up with a top soul producer to have a belated big hit?

    Hi

    Here are some clues.

The top producer was one of the leading producers of a certain type of soul music. He produced many hits from the late 60's to the later part of the 70's.

The star has had hits since the early 70's & is still having hits today.

    Hi Ian,

The producer is not willie Mitchell.

This producer had, I think, more big hits. He also wrote a number of quality song in a partnership with a female who wrote the lyrics.

The star has a habit of selling his stuff via auction. He alsways has a lot of stuff to sell. He also played on those cheap & nasty cover compilation ( e.g. Top of the Pops) in the late 60's & early 70's.

Singer must be Elton John. But I can't think who the producer might be. Is there a Philly connection?

    Hi Ian,

Correct. It is Elton John. The song, a recent No.1, is 'Are you ready for Love'.

The song was recorded in 1977 in the US. Elton wanted to try something different. The session was a full blown Philly do with the Detroit Spinners singing background. For some reason, it didn't get released till 1979. It was a minor hit in the UK. It was quite popular in the discos at the time. The song has been featured on a Sky ad promoting football.

The producer was Thom Bell. He wrote the song. Yes he was one of the giants of Philly soul along with Gamble & Huff.

Thom Bell wrote & produced for acts such as The Delfonics, The Stylistics & The Detroit Spinners. He co wrote with the late Linda Creed.

He had big Pop & RnB success in the US & UK & worldwide. He had very big success with the Detroit Spinners who were 2nd only to the O'Jays as top male soul vocal group in the early to mid 70s.

    Over to you Ian.

Damn, I thought it might be Thom Bell (hence the Philly question), just couldn't remember his name.

    My question:

Who named himself "L.H.C." in the credits to at least one of his mid-80's albums, and what does L.H.C. stand for?

Soz for the thread hijack - but Dean, what are the Delfonics like in the main? I love the track on Jackie Brown ("Didn't I blow your mind this time") and just wandered if that's representative. Actually, I love the whole of that soundtrack but that's pretty much par for the course with Tarentino soundtracks (though the cover of "Magic Carpet Ride" on Reservoir Dogs is crap)...

Back to the thread - I don't know the answer :)

    Hi Dom,

The Delfonics were one of the first groups to sing in style that was known as the "Philly sound". They were producer Thom Bell's first big success. Tight harmonies, tight sleek, lush music & production lead the way for the philly sound. They offered a different look to the soul music at the time. They also help change the outlook of soul music.

'Didn't I blow your mind' is a good standerd bearer for their sound. If you like that, you will love Ready or Not here I come, La La (means I love you) & Break your Promise.

You may be able to get 'The Delfonics, Definitive Collection' on BMG for little money (mid price). This has all their big hits plus more.

Cheers Dean - I'm in town tonight so might well see if MVC have it (I *miss* Reading now I'm in Exeter - no FOPP, no buzzing nightlife (as such) and of course, the women I want seem to all be still up there. Oh well - at least Exeter's got the MVC :)
