........that's why i was able to get it.

This next question is also indicative of the depth of my 'pop trivia' knowledge.

Why, on Dire Straits' 'Brothers in Arms', is Eric Clapton credited?

    Good question, let's see:

    A&M: Alpert & Moss

    EMI: Electrical & Musical Industries

    MGM: Metro Goldwyn Mayer

    FFRR: Full Frequency Response Recordings

    CBS: Columbia Broadcast Systems

    BMG: Bertelsmann (sp?) Music Group

    GRP: dunno

    SBK: dunno

ATCO: something to do with Atlantic methinks

    AATW: dunno

MCA: dunno, should be obvious but I can't think

    TK: dunno

    PWL: Pete Waterman Ltd

    RCA: Radio Corporation of America

    RSO: dunno

    STAX: Stewart & Axton

    UA: United Artists

WEA: I ought to know that, but I don't

ZTT: Zang Tumb Tuum, from Marinetti's futurist classic The Art of Noises , in case anyone cares

    HMV: His Master's Voice

I make that 12-ish, and no Googling involved.

    Hi,

    Here are the answers.

    A&M - Alpert & Moss

EMI - Electrical & Musical Industries

    MGM - Metro Goldwyn Mayer

FFRR - Full Frequency Range Recordings

    CBS - Columbia Broadcasting System

    BMG - Bertelsmann Music Group

GRP - Grusin & Rosen Productions

SBK - Swid, Bandier & Koppelman

    ATCO - ATlantic COmpany

AATW - All Around The World

MCA - Music Corporation of America

    TK - Terry Kane

    PWL - Pete Waterman Ltd.

RCA - Record Corporation of America

    RSO - Robert Stigwood Organisation

    STAX - STewart & AXton

    UA - United Artists

    WEA - Warner Elektra Atlantic

    ZTT - Zang Tumb Tuum

    HMV - His Master's Voice

Well done Ian on a good first attempt. Some of these labels are well known, others are not but they all have had number ones in the pop charts (except for GRP).

The sad thing is that most of these ( & loads more) labels have been swallowed up by the big five labels. i.e. EMI, Sony, Time Warner, Universal & BMG.

Having said that some of these labels did go bust or hit hard times.

Next question: David Bently achieved brief success when a famous vocalist guested on his group's album. Name the group, album, and famous vocalist.

    Come on chaps.

A clue: the vocalist appears on three of the 10 songs on the album, one of them a single. Released in 1972 or 1973 IIRC.

How many clues do you need? Another one: the vocalist in question is Scottish, and male.

    Hi Ian,

It seems that we're the only two playing.

    The group, Python Lee Jackson

The album, In a Broken Dream

The Vocalist, Rod Stewart ( He was born in London).
