Posting vinyl (now with list of records)

I have been put in charge of selling my parents entire record collection, which they want me to do via ebay as they think thats how they'll make the most money (they've sold a few things on there before and got a good price...but everything will be starting at 99p with no reserve as I have little idea of how much any of them are really worth).

Anyway, I was just wondering the sort of packaging which is considered appropriate for sending 12' records through the post?

I was thinking 2-3 layers of corrugated cardboard either side (larger than the record so as to protect the edges well, and then wrapping the whole lot in brown paper...but having little real experience with vinyl I just wondered what is considered the norm when posting records.

I don't want to post any only for them to get completely wrecked...it pains me enough that they're selling some of it (I want the Hendrix, The Who, Stones and Beatles LPs off 'em, not that I have a turntable yet, but thats not the point!).

    :)

    Give TonyL a shout.
I have purchased a few records from Tony and they have been very well packed.
I think it is a dedicated record packaging, not sure on cost tho.

there are a number of companies that specialise in record mailers. might be worth a google search to see what deal you can get, which will depend on how many you're looking for.

be sure to factor the cost of these into your P&P though.

don't send vinyl 'wrapped' in corrugated card. it is tacky and cheap! Get dedicated vinyl posters. They protect much better, look far better and will help with good feedback.

Thanks for the quick replies folks :)

I shall look into the proper packaging materials, if thats 'the done thing' - theres probably about 100 records that will be sold, so I would hope that I'd be able to pick up packaging material at a fairly low 'per unit' cost.

If anyone knows anywhere off the top of their head where I could buy vinyl posters online that would be much appreciated :)

I use cruciform mailers from www.covers33.co.uk - they are not indestructable, but fair far better in the mail than the envelope type of mailer and you can get far more records in them.

Yes I was going to say is there anything good in it? :)
I have a stack of used mailers (10-20 ish) but they'd be fine for another send I think if you want them but as your on the other side of the country its probably not worth it. If your passing near penisborough at any point I'll let you have them though.

take the record out of the sleeve, and any inner sleeve when you package them up - they can move inside during transit, and damage them (pushing through from the inside).

Cheers for that link Dean, just bought the ones you linked too (100 mailers and 130+ stiffeners) :)

Anex, cheers for the offer, I think I'll be keeping well away from any region called Penisborough though ;)

I'll make a list of the records and post it here in a bit (it seems to be mostly 60s/70s stuff, all the usual Beatles, John Lennon, Elton John, Rolling Stones, The Who, some Led Zeppelin plus theres some motown/hendrix etc), to give you guys a heads up.

The thing is neither I nor my parents have any idea what they're worth, hence them wanting me to use ebay ('let the market decide what they're worth' as my dad said), so whilst I could post them for sale here first, I wouldn't really know if I'd be getting a fair price or not...I hope that makes sense and you don't think thats me being stingy!

They will all be going on ebay with no reserve and a start price of 99p though, at some time in the next 2 weeks. I've only prepared 15 listings as of yet though! At least another 100 to go...

    Okay, here's the list....mostly first editions/early pressings.

Condition for the lot (except the 78s) seems 'okay to good' to my relatively untrained eyes when it comes to vinyl, they've all been stored upright and aren't warped, scratching seems fairly minimal. Unfortunately neither me or my parents have a turntable (my parents one broke ~10 years ago and they never got another) to test them on and see how they play.
