Hello everyone, just recently I got rid of a Godawful Chinese valve amplifier which turned out to be a dangerous pile of junk. I am now replacing it with a Pro audio studio style amplifier just because it is quirky and different. For all of you out there I have a question: Which would be better, a PA amplifier or a studio amplifier...? I am using it with a Gemini PA7000 pre amp, a Linn Basik/Alphason Xenon/Ortofon OM30 turntable combo, a pair of Q Acoustics 1020i speakers and an Original 2008F HDCD CD player.

I have a preference for a Yamaha P2500S PA amp because I like the way it looks but I understand that all of these high power amplifiers produce a gorgeous relaxed, easygoing sound. I have no intention of spending 800 quid on a 50 Watt HiFi amplifier that the dealer paid 350 pounds for just because he/she happens to have a shop and will not be a party to this kind of pricing, so, I choose to use a studio or PA amp instead.

    Thanks for any advice.

I am using a Danley PA speaker (SH 100B and SH 50 sometimes) with an MC2 Audio MC1250 studio amp (changed from an Audio Note Kageki amp (original Kondo made) and Avantgarde Acuostics Trio horn speakers). I have a friend who is using the same amp with a ProAc Response D80 speakers. We are quite happy with our systems. I know somebody who is using Thiel speaker with an MC2 Audio T1000 amp. Do not afraid to try MC2 Audio amps.:)

The yammy amps are pretty good value for money,we use a p7000 to run a pair of EAW SB 528 and whilst not as good as lab gruppen fp's they manage the job pretty well.Make sure you turn off the YS Processing circuit though.,o and erm personally gemini to me aint pro audio, cheap disco possible, but cetainly not hifi

The Gemini PA7000 preamp was bought as a temporary/stopgap type of purchase. My original intention was to use the CD straight into the poweramp and use the gain controls on the poweramp to set the volume. I noticed that the PA7000 had a phono stage so I bought one. Prior to this, I was using a Graham Slee Gram Amp 1 but I have to say in all honesty, the PA7000 has a better phono stage. The Gemini phono stage reduces surface noise a helluva lot over the Gram Amp 1.

For power amplification I have been looking at the Yamaha P series as they appear to be excellent value for money. Rather than the P2500S I may go for the P3500S as this offers more power and therefore considerably more headroom. As my speakers are nominally 6 Ohms I shall stick with the amplifier in stereo mode for ease of drive.

All that is required now is a refund from Digital Village for the duff Behringer A500 I bought from them. This unit just distorts everything that is put through it regardless of how it is fed the signal. I would recommend anyone to stay well clear of this amplifier.

Mmmm... I doubt very much that a PA amplifier is HiFi in the truest sense of the term.

I think most people would find from my original post that I have no intention of paying out more than 350 pounds so where do you suggest I get a brand new MC2 amp for that amount of money...?

I checked your link and yes, it looks very nice. My problem at the moment is that I have to get this refund from Digital Village for the Behringer and, I would put money on this, it won't come in in time.

As long as I do get a refund and not a replacement I shall keep a keen eye on this ebay dealer to see what they have in the future. In the meantime I've checked no end of MC2 links to see what they are all about.
