They dont make it anymore do they? I thought it was replaced by the Expression. Anyway if you've got that sort of money, get a Rega P2, or one of those new Goldring decks, which are supposed to be good.

    Hi,

I too would go for the Rega 2 which is a better deck. The project deck used to retail at £300. You pick it for £250 or less. The Rega is better put together & has a better arm.

Also you could look at the Nad turntable. This is made by Rega & is basically a Rega 2. These can be picked up for less than £200 if you are lucky.

I have seen the Goldring turntable but not heard it. I would say that it would not be as good as the Rega 2. It looks & feels cheaper. The arm looks like a RB250 but the base fitting is different. It is screwed down with crosshead screws. I think this is £150 including cartridge.

What you should do? If you can, is compare the Project against the Rega 2 or the Nad turntable. Also you would get a better price for the Rega 2 if you sold it on at a later date.

Aren't the Goldring / NAD decks all based on the P2 anyway?

    thanks fellas.

I seem to be asking a lot of questions lately regarding turntables, hope you all dont mind. Its just that i like to get the best for my money and i dont really know much about turntables.

Your patience and advice is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

The Nad turntable is made by Rega & is almost the same. Rega has only so many dealers so the Nad is a way of getting a deck to a wider audience.

The Goldring deck isn't a Rega 2 but it is most likely based on it. It looks & feels like a cheaper version. It's a stab at the Project Debut market. I don't it would sound better than a Rega 2 but I can't fully tell until I've heard it.

If Rega came up with the design originally, surley they'll make the best of it, and for the best sound, it would mean sticking with the P2.
I bought a P3 and it blew all Project decks up to the 6 out of the water, + its upgradeable (Origin Live).

I'm with the "Go Rega" crowd. Better arm, will keep its value better on the secondhand market, so easier to sell on, and all-round a better deck.

Rega are apparently releasing two new decks at Bristol, one of them even cheaper than the P2, no idea what performance will be like.

Do they still make the p2. It seems to be by far the most popular deck.

What date is the bristol show on. I would be interested in having a look at the new deck.

    Cheers

    Oh right.

Is the P3 considered better than the p2 then? Is worth going for a P3 over a p2 ie are the compnents better/stronger etc.

    Cheers

The P3 is better than the P2. I did a side by side when I was buying a t/t. The P3 has a better arm, a glass platter and a more expensive motor (I believe).

Not that the P2 is bad, it bettered the Projects I heard around the £200-250 range quite comfortably. P3 is worth every penny extra, assuming you can stretch the budget to it, but it's £300 without cartridge. If you've got a strict budget, you won't go wrong with a P2 or a NAD 533.

If you've put a £200 limit on it, go NAD as it's got a nice Goldring cartidge thrown in, as good as the ortofon OM carts that come with the Project Debuts/1/Expressions.
