Just to let those that gave advice, I have changed my Quad 99/909 for a puresound a30 and the results are pretty damn good. The electrostatics now seem like the most musical speakers on earth. The a30 digs up bags more detail and yet makes it more realistic. The Benz Glider that I swapped for a Dynavector dv-20x also finds more detail but I'm not yet convinced of it's musicality.

Anyway, I'd like to get a decent second hand FM tuner to replace my Denon TU460. Rotel 850, Arcam, Audiolab, Creek - any suggestions? I do have a proper high gain directional roof ariel.

    Merry christmas by the way!

Good result there. The cartridge issue is always difficult because of the difficulty in being able to try before you buy.

Are you tied in to a modern tuner or would you be prepared to try something vintage?

Old Sony ES tuners seem to be really well rated but are now attracting big bucks. Don't these people know that FM may disappear?:(

Yeh, the glider needs 50 hours to settle in completely, and fiddle about with the loading on it, it'll like more than the DV. Somewhere between 3-400 should be sweet.

Big old Japanese tuners from Accuphase, Kenwood and Pioneer are hard to beat.
The Pioneer models are great value but the Accuphase T100 and T101 are top drawer in every respect. A Pioneer TX9100, 9500 or 9800 will likely come in under £100. Accuphase will easily be £250+ but worth it IMO.

I have picked up a Sony st-s 700ES tuner which although it sounds much better than my old Denon, only picks up Radio 1 and 2 with enough signal to maintain stereo, not cut out and be hiss free. Currently using a 3 element directional roof FM aeria - do I need a something like an 8 element Blake aerial http://www.aerialshack.com/blake-super-high-gain-element-aerial-p-1595.html

or look for a more sensitive tuner?

Either will correct your problem, but I have an ST-S777ES and it is no slouch at picking up a good strong signal where I am so I tend to think your antenna is at fault. You can be certain by ensuring the Tuner is a proper UK model and then trying another to see if the problem persists. If it does, a new/better antenna is in order but if not it may be your tuner.

It is ok with a full signal but if not it keeps cutting out - only 1 and 2 seem to transmit with enough power. How do I tell if it is a UK model?
