    I considered much of this, then went out and bought a laptop with a spdif output and im happy with it

    That one is still a bit too much PC alike for my tastes. There's a couple of chassis available that allow for passive cooling using large heatsink ala power amp style.

    Here's my own take, its silent except when gaming because the graphics cards whirr up to keep them cool.

    Re Purpose built pc for source

    Are there any advantages in using a laptop as a source over a pc
    it seems that a usb dac is more favoured over a sound card.
    if using a usb dac is fan noise still a problem
