Doing a room change due to PSUs and phono amps being dotted around the room, so adding a 2nd rack to split the gear over 2 instead of 1 and window sills.

I've bought some short speaker cables (Chord Rumour 2 replacing the bogo standard Linn cable) and I now need a second rack which will hold 3 amps, the dvd player and the lcd therefore I want 5 shelves.

I've been looking at the soundstyle status 5 tier rack which is very pleasing to the eye but I don't know what it sounds like.

Max price is £400, anyone got any experience with his rack or have any other suggestions ?

IMHO racks make very little difference, especially if not using a TT, as long as it's sturdy and up to the weight you plan to put on it, it will be fine, buy the one you like the look of.

Racks which don't work make very little difference. Most don't.

You've tried every single hi-fi support at home, then?

    Thought not.

Anyway, with your previous ART Impression monitor speakers, you'd have no way of telling any differences!

    definition please.

none of my gear has fallen on the floor, so I think my rack performs its function perfectly. ;)

I have worked in a hifi-shop with all kinds of racks and putting some Arcam stuff on a Finite Elemente Pagoda Reference rack instead of lowly Creaktiv was nothing short of a stunning improvement.

Sadly racks undoubtedly do make a noticeable contibution to the sound of a well set up system in my experience, and this has to be borne in mind if you are looking to extract the maximum from your hifi.

If on the other hand, you just want it to look impressive rather than sound good, there are a number of very stylish designs on the market from the likes of Soundstyle, Schroers & Schroers and Atacama.

From personal exprience, tinkering with supports like Seismic sinks and Ceraballs on these decorative stands can lead to noticable changes in the system's presentation. I hesitate to say conclusive improvements as that is highly subjective IMO.

Ah!!, but you could with castles, (you had these before the atc's, and you also had mana before the atc's, IIRC)bit double standards James, besides if your system is an indication of stands working, er then no thanks.

griffo, buy what you like, listen to james and spend thousands of pounds on pig iron, and glass, or buy something nice for it to sit on, and the rest on music, your choice.

The Castle Chesters are in a different (2nd) system. They are also a hell of a lot clearer than your "style-over-content" ARTs, which really are the worst I've ever heard. I nearly fell over when you told me the RRP.

I haven't recommended any racks in this thread.

You are in a minority of one, when it comes to critique-ing my current system.

I'd like to see some evidence that racks make a difference.

could anyone reliably identify a selection of racks in a blindfold test?

If you've reached this conclusion without trying any, then it's good for you. Spend your money elsewhere.

my experience is racks are yet another piece of the hifi jig saw puzzle. every bit helps/makes a diff. budget permitting, always get the best rack you can afford. personally, i avoid glass, perspects like a plaguel. wood or air bladders are my cup of tea.

check out zerogain's for sale section - my mate has some Finite Elemente ones for sale cheap.
