I allready have a reasonable DAC, the superdac that was modified by Wadia Meister all these years ago on this forum....

Made a big difference to the 506, much more dynamic and less fluffy sounding. I reckon the 506 transport is pretty good?

    Have looked at this:

    Dynavector L200

    http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180539220734&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

    and this

    Audio Note M1

    http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370412970335&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Also this Bencmark Dac remote pre amp:

    http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Benchmark-DAC1-HDR-Remote-controlled-DAC-Pre-Amplifier-/250510198507?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item3a539246eb

Seems a lot opf money for a tiddly box with plasticy remote. I also have a turntable that gets very occasional use, so phono stage is handy. The benchmark doesnt have many inputs either.

Think it needs to be secondhand that I look at....

That M1 looks a very safe bet.

I would try to borrow a good passive pre-amp.

.. the experiment to see, whether your power amp is happy being driven by a passive.

If it works, you could try a better passive.

Great passives are easily reachable in your budget.

It takes a very good active pre-amp to provide the neutrality of a passive. On the flip-side with the wrong amp they can sound lifeless.

I understand this is an impedence matching issue.

    to Richard Dunn,

    lol, I read with great interest your piece on Chinese ethic, social norms and all, I agree quite very much, being fully Chinese myself, got to hand it to you, nicely put;

but I would agree with Rob on the matter of hi-fi, there are decent Chinese gear just as there is a pool of badly made trash, so just trust your ears, at least that's what I go by also!

Where I come from a spade is a shovel, and you need to be very careful who you call a bigot, because it might offend.

Is it really necessary to use such pejorative and personal terms?

And what a cracking amp it is! liked it straight out of the box.

Amazing from something so small and aethetically pleasing.

Haven't tried the USB dac yet, is there any way I can use it with my CD player?

I would need to convert SPDIF coaxial to usb, not sure if thats possible??
