Received two SB3 units today. Still have not received the wifi router, they sent me a clock radio instead by mistake, got to return it. Router will be at least a week to come.

So I connected the SB3 by Ethernet to my wired router, and can stream Internet radio (great selection BTW, and sound quality is all right, considering).

But I must be doing something wrong as I keep getting the "Can't connect to Slimserver" message.

    Any thoughts?

Sorry for stating the obvious, but I have to check:
    1) Is slimserver running on the PC
    2) do you have a firewall running?

One other thing you could check, load up the web interface (http://localhost:9000) and see if it finds the player

No offence taken :) Yes Slimserver is installed and running.

I should make it clear that I'm listening to Internet radio via Squeezenetwork, which I guess is not indication that the network is OK?

I suspect I'm doing something wrong when setting up the SB, maybe something to do with the IP address?

As for the firewall, I checked that and found that I got the correct exceptions set up.

    ???

And after clicking on your localhost link, what should I do?

If you get the radio it means the SB is on the network fine and I'm guessing from the fact you posted this that the PC is on the network.

Can you ping the SB from the PC?

If you know the ip of the SB, try to telnet to SB IP port 9090

The SB needs port 9090 and 9000 free, apart from a firewall I'm not sure what else it could be, but we;ll go one step at a time

I'm not sure what you mean by "pinging" the SB from the PC. Please remember I'm near-illiterate when it comes to PCs.

Same for trying to "telnet" to SB IP port 9090

Apparently, ports 9090 and 9000 are free. I checked that on the firewall panel.

    Ok, no problem:

Do you know the SB's IP address? It should have told you when it connected.

    To Ping:

On the PC: Start - Run - cmd (enter)
Type: ping SB IP address (for example ping 192.168.0.1)

    To telnet

Start - Run - Cmd (enter)
Type: telnet SB IP 9090 (for example telnet 192.168.0.1 9090)

If these work, the PC can see the SB which would imply a software issue, if it fails, it is a network issue

I tried the ping thing with the IP address obtained automatically, i.e. 192.168.0.03.

answered "could not find SB host. Check name and try again" (or similar wording, translated from French)

The Telnet attempts produced a long answer in double dutch

Thats odd, the ping should have timed out.

In the command prompt, type ipconfig/all and post the results here.

Also, if you could let me know the network details of the SB (its in the settings menu), the IP, subnet etc.

    Thanks

When checking the Network settings, this is what I get

    1. Connect via: Ethernet
    2. Obtain IP address: Automatically
    3. IP address: 192.168.0.1
    4. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    5. Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    6. DNS server: 192.168.0.1
    7. Slimserver 192.168.0.1
    8. MAC address: 00 04 20 06 1d a4
    9. Auto Upgrade: Off
    10. Firmware version: 26

Is there a way I can capture the cmd.exe screen?

There are ways, but if you just let me know the IP, Subnet and Gateway it will probably be easier.

From that it seems the Squeezebox is on 192.168.0.1, but also that the PC and router are on the same IP which seems a little odd.

I'm guessing the router is on 192.168.0.1, the PC on 192.168.0.2 or 3

    From the cmd.exe screen:

    IP 192.168.0.4
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Do you have any other computers on the network?

If not, on the SB, redo the network settings, but instead of letting it pick up its own ip via DHCP, give it these settings:

    IP: 192.168.0.3
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1

It sounds like the SB has somehow picked up the router's IP which could be because DHCP is off.

Did just that, and for the first time got the "Looking for slimservers" message, but ended up getting the "Can't connect ... " message.

Can you still get internet radio via Squeezenetwork? Just want to check that part still works.

On the PC, load up task manager (right click on the taskbar and click task manager) and in the processes tab, is there one called slim.exe?

Also, try sending a ping to 192.168.0.3

And BTW there is an iMac connected to the router, but not really networked as we do not share anything but the Internet connection

That shouldn't be a problem then, it seems like the PC and SB aren't communicating, its just a matter of working out why

I have slim.exe in the taks manager process tab

Pinging 192.168.0.3 gave four identical lines

    (bytes = 32 time < 1ms TTL=64

    Ping statistics for xxx:
    Packets: sent = 4 received = 4 lost = 0

Does that say anything to you :)
