I'd LOVE the mono mix (Ilockyer has the mono CD issue); even my low-life chav scum "Fame" reissue of Piper ended up costing £15! It sounds great though; people slag off "Fame" pressings, but some of the ones I have are excellent, including the first Undertones album (I found the Sire original in a charity shop recently for 70p though - the REAL original with NO "Teenage kicks" on it).

I bet that US copy of the Joy Division "Atmosphere" track sounds awesome; it's OK on the CD of Substance, but I bet it's far far far better on decent vinyl.

BTW Tony, what was that pub called on the Wirrel with the phone box of 01516323003 (from the OMD "Red frame white light") called again? We tried ringing the phonebox during a drunken Easter Monday and got no reply....

    Dom,

The Fame reissues are unfairly maligned IMO. Proper collectors sniff at them probably because they are so obviously budget reissues with no pretence at being anything else.

But I've got Fame copies of Piper and Relics as well as Down by the Jetty by Dr Feelgood and Searching for the Young Soul Rebels by Dexies - all of them fine soundwise (especially Relics which is of surprisingly good quality).

I've got that too, I definitely prefer the mono mix, though my record sounds a lot better. I'd still love to find the original vinyl though!

Its outside The Railway Inn in Meols.

I have it on 4 different sources

    1) CD - Substance - Sounds OK
    2) CD - 24 Four Hour Party People
    3) Love Will Tear Us Apart '95 (London records) 12" - sounds better thanCD
    4) Attompshere/She's lost Control - This sounds awsome the drum attacks really stand out. Though is sadly the UK version and not the amercican version.

    Ah - Amazingtrade - here's a question then...

Do you think that "Transmission"'s been "meddled with" on 24HPP to give a reverb (particularly when the drums first come in) compared to the version on Substance???

I reckon the 24HPP transcription grooves better, but it sounds odd...

Tried playing along with my new (to me) bass last night though, and was shocked at how effin' easy the bassline to "Transmission" is though - is Peter Hook into simple, err, hooks, 'cos this seems much easier than the one on "Dead souls" though I've not tried jamming to that yet...

Plus I need a tuner/amp/heaphones socket for said bass - it's all in tune with itself, but a bit flat I think... I need a plectrum as well...

    I digress...

Uncle Ants - any idea whether the "Starline" version of "Relics" is better than the "Fame" one? Mine's got the cover with no pink on the "Pink Floyd Relics" bit, and with "Starline" along the bottom. Sounds like they used an odd mix of "Arnold Lane" (reprocessed stereo from mono perhaps!?) as mine's all phase shifted over to the right, while the rest of the LP is fine?

Erm I haven't actaully noticed much difference between the two but I tend to listen to it more on my 24hpp CD than my substance one so my maybe its sub concious.

Some of Hooky's bass lines are quite simple I guess because he tought himself he wanted to keep it simple, I think what makes Hooky good is the way he performs, he is very random.

I think perhaps the most underated member of Joy Divsion/New Order is probably Stephen Morris, he is such a great band member but Hooky always seems ot take most of the credit. Barney is just too quiet to take a lot of the credit even though he is lead singer.

He produced a lot of the Happy Monday's stuff and he didn't want his name on the records.

Hooky's bass lines are what introduced me to bass playing – superbly effective yet simple. I taught myself to 'play' bass in 1980 by learning Unknown Pleasures on a friend's Jap Rick 4001 copy!

The Starline is the original pressing, and is now worth a bit – the last two I've eBayed each made 17 quid. It was later issued on MFP with pink lettering, these ain't worth anything.

The original 7†singles of Arnold Layne and See Emily Play (I've got both!) were mono and were indeed reprocessed for Relics.

That's my kind of style as well - simple and effective (but I DO love sliding up and down the frets too :)).

Hmm - so MVE in Notting Hill CAN give away bargains then - my Relics is mint and was only £2 - sweet!

Does anyone in the UK make a convincing Ricky copy? Always fancied one after seeing the psychadelicly painted one in the Magical Mystery Tour :)

Only ever heard my copy so can't really say. Possibly the same version of Arnold Lane - all a bit strange and echoey sounding, yeah?? I always assumed that was how it was supposed to sound :MILD: I'll take a careful listen tonight.

Yep, indeed - very odd - kind of like a badly worn tape where one channel goes muffled; why they didn't use the same equipment that the Beatles used to "fake stereo" the middle bit of "I am the walrus" (the bit where the radio tuning comes in) is beyond me....

Mind you, fake stereo from mono sucks - if they haven't got true stereo it should be NO stereo!

I've got the “stereo†mix on a scarce 1970 Holland compilation on Columbia called The Best of Pink Floyd (a great album featuring the A and B sides of the first 5 'Syd' singles). Details here: http://thinkfloyd.free.fr/disco/best1.htm Arnold Layne and See Emily Play are definitely reprocessed from mono, they sound kind of out of phase somehow.

<rant>It really annoys me that the remaining members of Floyd totally neglect the early years when it comes to reissuing stuff. There is a wealth of music that is virtually unobtainable now. I suspect many Floyd fans have never even heard 'Apples and oranges', 'Candy and a currant bun', 'It would be so nice' or 'Point me at the sky' (even I haven't got the last one!). That is just the commercial releases, there is an astounding amount of stuff in archives, live footage from the UFO club, early gigs etc. I'm sure it is just the humungous ego of Waters preventing this superb music being released, certainly in interviews he dismisses the Syd period as being somewhat irrelevant. </rant>

    Dom,

Had a listen last night and yes, kinda muffled in the right hand channel and oddly echoey sounding. Like I said, its the only version I ever heard and always assumed that it was supposed to sound weird and echoey (its Floyd after all), presumably not though.

    TonyL,

Wouldn't have thought it'd be Waters as he left them nearly twenty years ago.

I used to have a copy of Joy Divisions "Licht und Blindheit" 7" on Sordide Sentimentale... Sold it for £30 when I was skint, now it's allegedly worth over £400!
And various house moves have "lost" me a few valuable bits'n'bobs.. Tubeway Armys first single ("Oh didn't I say") plus a blus copy of their 1st album; and PiLs Metalbox in the film can; and Crass' Feeding of the 5000 ep; and UK Subs "She's not there" on black vinyl (rarer than the green one I've still got!)..
Still got quite a lot of probably rare new wave singles - such as The Door and The Window, Essential Logic, Human League's Being Boiled/Circus of Death, echo and the Bunnymen "pictures on my wall" and the Earcom eps...
Funny how things can just "disappear" (usually at parties..)

Tony - thanks for that :)

Photos duly taken this weekend, and 2 beers bought in the pub. Funny; it was the Liverpool/MUFC match while I was getting the drinks, so pee poor service - and they didn't know what "real ale" was (must be a Stella pub then).

Then one guy started commenting to his mate that I was "a Londoner" or something so I bricked it and had the beers outside!!! What a Southern wuss - but IME big crowds + footie + pub = potential bad news...

I definitely want to go to that pub again though :)

Tony - is this FACUS2? I just received a copy (with black labels) from the rare bits on 101cd.com; the sleeve has minor wear but the vinyl is mint (well, looks it - won't know 'til I play it tonight). Hmmm curious....

Mine is Facus 2 as well however the labels are white and at the buttom of the sleave it says in brackets (UK). Oh well :(

So I guess its a UK release of the US version because of the "Facus" which was Factories USA branch.

Try holding it up to a bright light - if it is a UK first pressing it will glow dark red! (same goes with Unknown Pleasures - they were meant to be black, but the vinyl mix was slightly wrong).

She's Lost Control was released a month or so earlier on the Factory US imprint, I'm not sure why they did this, or even whether it was intentional, but there was certainly a period of time that it was only available here on very hard to find import. It was slightly later released in the UK as Atmosphere I guess as that had proved the more popular track. Atmosphere had previously been released as an ultra rare French 7" on Sordid Sentimental with Dead Souls as the B side.
